France: Lyon bounce back away to table bottom

5 January 2006 14:19

PARIS, Jan 5 (SW) – French defending champions Olympique Lyonnais have put their first setback of the season behind them, by bouncing back in style away to table bottom Strasbourg.

The four-time French champions crashed to a 1-3 home defeat (their first defeat of the season) against title rivals Lille just before the winter break, but they went back to winning ways in style last night, after thrashing table bottom Strasbourg 4-0 on Alsatian soil.

A hat trick from Sylvain Wiltord (6’, 57’, 74’) and a netting effort from Jeremie Berthod (41’) ensured Gerard Houllier all three points on the night, with the table leaders looking more certain than ever to retain their title this term.

Guy Lacombe’s PSG debut could have been a worse one, after his side convincingly cruised to a 3-1 win over a struggling Sochaux side, while Marseille failed to clinch the three points against Lens, despite Charles Itandje’s first-half sending-off (1-1).

Nantes suffered their fourth successive winless league game, after being defeated by an opportunist Rennes side 0-2 at la Beaujoire, while a double from Le Mans’ Tulio De Melo added to Metz’ woes, the Grenats remaining deep in the relegation zone with 14 units.

Nancy were held by Bordeaux to a goalless draw, and les Verts of St Etienne could not edge the winner against Troyes, their tempered 1-1 stalemate being far from the best shows delivered this year at Geoffroy Guichard, despite the promising debut of on-loan striker Helder Postiga.

Finally, Lille and Nice earned maximum points against Ajaccio (2-0) and Toulouse (2-1) respectively.

Tonight, Monaco travel to Auxerre, both sides looking to snatch three points and climb up the table to runners-up spot.
