France: Rennes hammer Lyon; Bordeaux held by bottom side Metz

25 February 2006 22:19

LYON, Feb 25 (SW) - Lyon suffered their second loss of the season in an emphatic way on Saturday as they were crushed at home by Rennes, but they only conceded one point of their lead as Bordeaux were held by cellar dwellers Metz.

Lyon - Rennes 1-4

John Utaka got Rennes off to a fast start by punching the back of the net in the 19th minute, and Yoann Gourcuff doubled the lead 12 minutes later, much to the surprise of the home crowd.

Lyon pulled a goal back from the penalty spot through Juninho in the 37th minute, but Utaka restored Rennes' two-goal lead in the 53rd minute. Utaka completed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute to cap off a dismal night for the home side.

Bordeaux - Metz 3-3

Bordeaux now are within six points of the leaders, but will rue the missed opportunity to get even close as bottom side Metz played one of their best games of the year.

Souleymane Youla put the visitors in front in the 15th minute, but Marouane Chamakh scored successive goals within two minutes and Bordeaux saw themselves in front 2-1.

This didn't phase Metz as one minute after Chamakh's second goal, Frédéric Roux gifted Metz an own goal to level the match at 2-2, and Roy Contout sent the visitors to the break with a 3-2 lead in the 43rd minute.

Alejandro Alonso pulled the home side level at 3-3 with 20 minutes to play, but they couldn't muster up a winner and had Chamakh sent off in the 89th minute.

Auxerre - Toulouse 2-0

Danish international Thomas Kahlenberg scored twice as Auxerre jumped into third place in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Kahlenberg put the home side in front with a goal in the 21st minute and doubled the lead midway through the second half to ensure the home side captured full points.

Nantes - Paris Saint-Germain 0-0

Nantes' French international goalkeeper Mickaël Landreau played magnificently as they held PSG to a scoreless draw.

Landreau made several nice stops on both sides of half-time and PSG striker Pauleta had a shot crash off the post on a frustrating day for him.

Le Mans - Saint-Etienne 0-1

Le Mans are still fifth in the table, but suffered a setback as they were brought down to Earth by visiting Saint-Etienne.

The lone goal of the match was scored by young Portuguese striker Hélder Postiga in the 57th minute as Saint-Etienne remain lodged in the middle of the standings.

Nancy - Sochaux 0-3

Sochaux appear to be safer from relegation as they moved 12 points clear of the bottom three with a three-goal win at Nancy.

Moumouni Dagano put the visitors in front 1-0 in the 16th minute, and an own goal by Cédric Lecluse just before half-time sent them to the dressing room up two.

After Brazilian striker Kim was sent off in the 80th minute, his countryman Araujo Ilan scored Sochaux's third goal with two minutes to play.
