FA Cup: Chelsea surivive Colchester scare

19 February 2006 21:12

LONDON, Feb 19 (SW) - Chelsea needed late goals from winger Joe Cole to eliminate a stingy Colchester United side from the FA Cup fifth round at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in a 3-1 victory.

Chelsea - Colchester United 3-1

League One Colchester got off to a shockingly good start as Mark Yeates hit the post, but the visitors pressure paid off in the 28th minute as a cross in by Richard Garcia was deflected by Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho into his own goal.

The home side found their composure and nine minutes later were level as Paulo Ferreira cleaned up a mess in the area after a corner kick which Colchester couldn't clear out.

Colchester held firm in the second half despite a clear edge in possession for Chelsea and it wasn't until the clock showed 80 minutes that Cole pounced on a rebound from a spilled Hernán Crespo shot and poked in for a 2-1 lead.

The favorites to take the cup then added an insurance goal late on as Cole hit a beautiful shot from just outside the area that dipped into Aidan Davison's goal.

Aston Villa - Manchester City 1-1

A last-gasp equalizer by Micah Richards allowed Manchester City to force a replay of their FA Cup fifth-round encounter with a 1-1 draw at Villa Park.

Milan Baros looked to have secured the win for the home side in the 72nd minute as the Czech international striker got on the end of a Steven Davis pass that put him on goal, allowing him to fire past David James.

The stage was then set for 17-year-old Richards in injury time to hit a header past Thomas Sørensen off of a corner kick and send the match to a replay.

Preston North End - Middlesbrough 0-2

Championship side Preston can now focus on earning a play-off spot as their FA Cup run was ended by a suddenly red-hot Middlesbrough side at Deepdale.

Nigerian striker Yakubu did the damage for the Teessiders, firing Steve McClaren's side into the lead in the 52nd minute with a beautiful finish. After receiving a pass from substitute Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Yakubu used a header to get by the defender before firing into Carlo Nash's goal.

Yakubu struck again on 77 minutes with a flying header off a free kick and that goal ensured Boro would advance to the quarter-finals.

Stoke City - Birmingham City 0-1

The dream ended for another Championship side at Britannia Stadium as Stoke were defeated by Birmingham, who secured a quarter-final berth in the FA Cup for the first time in 22 years.

Blues goalkeeper Maik Taylor was the hero for much of the match as he denied Stoke on a number of occasions and striker Mikael Forssell put the visitors in front two minutes into the second half with a poke home after Martin Latka got a touch to a corner kick.

Sambegou Bangoura and Michael Duberry both came close for Stoke later on in the second half, but Taylor made nice stops on both occasions to seal their progress.
