LIVERPOOL, Feb 18 (SW) - Liverpool advanced to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday, defeating Manchester United at Anfield Road. The win was Liverpool's first over United in the FA Cup in 85 years.
Liverpool - Manchester United 1-0 Edwin van der Sar did well to deny a Harry Kewell header in the 18th minute to keep the match scoreless, but he could not deny striker Peter Crouch a minute later as the striker headed Steve Finnan's cross and the Dutch goalkeeper could only get a touch to it. The ball then rolled into the net off of the goalpost. Finnan nearly doubled the lead in the 35th minute, but he fired his shot over and they went to the break with a 1-0 lead. Liverpool squandered a couple of chances in the second half that could have solidfied their lead, but United rarely threatened José Reina's goal and the Reds ran out winners. There was bad news for United, though, as midfielder Alan Smith was forced off with a horrific injury. Click here for more. Charlton Athletic - Brentford 3-1 The FA Cup dream of League One side Brentford came to an end at the Valley as they fell to defeat at the hands of Charlton. Darren Bent fired the Addicks into the lead just three minutes in as he latched onto a long pass by Radostin Kishishev and fired coolly past goalkeeper Stuart Nelson for a 1-0 lead. Jay Bothroyd sent the home side to the break with a two-goal advantage as he flew in a free kick that beat Nelson and Bryan Hughes made it three to the good for Charlton in the 62nd minute. Brentford wouldn't go home empty-handed as Isaiah Rankin scored a consolation goal with seven minutes to play, but the Bees' dream was over. Newcastle United - Southampton 1-0 Newcastle United did just enough to see off Southampton on Saturday and advance to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Caretaker boss Glenn Roeder had to fool around with his lineup, but Kieron Dyer's goal was enough to put the Magpies into the next round at the expense of their Championship opposition. Charles N'Zogbia made a run at Southampton's defense and laid off a pass which Dyer slotted past Saints goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski, who had to be substituted because of an injury later on in the match. Bolton Wanderers - West Ham United 0-0 These two Premiership sides couldn't decide it in 90 minutes, so they will meet again in a fifth-round replay at Upton Park after a goalless draw. It was a lack of finishing, and not chances, that hurt both sides at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday as Dean Ashton missed two clear-cut goalscoring opportunities on either side of half-time for the Hammers and Stelios Giannakopoulos had a goal ruled out for offside. Late on, Bolton began firing the ball constantly into the West Ham penalty area, but the defense of the visitors held firm to secure a replay. |
