LILLE, Feb 15 (SW) - Lille earned a narrow victory on Wednesday in their UEFA Cup Round of 32 first leg tie, and Strasbourg likewise were victorious. Monaco, however, were bested by Basel in Switzerland and Marseille held Bolton in England.

Lille - Shakhtar Donetsk 3-2

Lille started strong as Nicolas Fauvergue put home a shot in the 19th minute after Stephan Lichtsteiner's header and they found themselves up two goals as Geoffrey Dernis lobbed Shakhtar goalkeeper Bodan Shust in the 57th minute.

Peter Odemwingie's goal 20 minutes later gave Lille a commanding 3-0 lead, but the Ukrainians struck late twice as Brandão pulled a goal back in the 89th minute and Ciprian Marica's low shot in stoppage time brought new life to the tie as the sides head for the second leg in Donetsk.

Basel - Monaco 1-0

Basel were able to take the lead in the 78th minute as David Degen took a pass from Brazilian Eduardo and put a shot past Guillaume Warmuz from inside the penalty area.

Maicon came close for Francesco Guidolin's Monaco side late on, but they now have it all to do in the second leg if they want to keep up their European dream.

Bolton Wanderers - Marseille 0-0

Bolton will be upset not to have won at the Reebok Stadium after creating several chances, the best of which should have been in the 37th minute as Frédéric Dehu handled in the area, but the referee ignored the appeals for penalty.

Bolton had another penalty appeal denied by referee Olegario Benquerença midway though the second half for a challenge on Stelios Giannakopoulos, who had the best chance in open play late on when had a header from Ricardo Gardner's cross, but the attempt was wasted wide.

Litex - Strasbourg 0-2

Strasbourg's struggles in the French league have rarely bothered them during their UEFA Cup run this season, and they look set to advance to the final 16 after winning away to Bulgaria's Litex.

Ulrich Le Pen fired the visitors in front just two minutes into the proceedings, smashing a shot low past Vitomir Vutov after being set up by Guillaume Lacour's crossing pass.

After being outplayed in the first half, home side Litex came out stronger in the second term and they had a chance to level in the 79th minute when Strasbourg conceded a penalty after Lubomir Lubenov was fouled in the area.

Milivoje Novakovic, however, had his effort from the spot saved by Nicolas Puydebois and Amara Diané put the match out of reach three minutes later for the French side with a goal.
