Beckham to sneak into Tokyo

Former England captain David Beckham is due to make a sneak visit to Tokyo on Friday to appear at promotional events.
The 31-year-old Real Madrid midfielder would fly in by private jet and pop up at three unannounced spots during the day trip, said an official at Motorola Japan, which has signed Beckham as a "global brand ambassador". It will be his seventh and shortest visit to Japan since he first came in late 1997 as a member of Manchester United for an inter-continental club championship clash with Brazil's Palmeiras. "He is certain to look conspicuous as he will use a vehicle with special specifications in moving between event sites. If you spot a 'suspicious' vehicle at a crossroads, you'd better wave at it," the popular daily Sports Nippon said Thursday. Beckham was swarmed by female admirers on many of his previous visits to Japan, although his marketing magic has been on the wane. On his last visit in July 2005, Beckham received little domestic media coverage other than when he accused a Japanese player of spitting at him after Real Madrid's thrashing by J-League minnows Tokyo Verdy. "You'd better not miss the chance to encounter him as this might be his last trip to Japan as 'Beckham of Real'," Sports Nippon said. |
