NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, Dec 16 (Sw) - Newcastle United have been declared the winners of this year's Intertoto cup after the other two contenders crashed out of the UEFA cup.
The Intertoto cup features three final matches, of which the winners qualify for the UEFA Cup. The overall winner is decided when all but one team are flung from the tournament.
It is the Magpies' first prize in 37 years, the last one being the 1969 Fair's Cup. The trophy will probably be awarded before Newcastle's next UEFA cup tie, against Zulte-Waregem in February.
"We will be very happy to receive it," manager Glenn Roeder told the BBC. "It would be disrespectful to consider it a lesser tournament, as some managers do."
