AUXERRE/GLASGOW, Dec 14 (SW) - Cristiano Lucarelli's header sent Livorno into the Round of 32 in the UEFA Cup on Thursday as they beat Auxerre in Group A, while Rangers wrapped up first place in the group with a home win.
Auxerre - Livorno 0-1 Auxerre needed just a draw to seal their spot in the Round of 32, and it appeared they were headed in that direction after holding Livorno scoreless in the first half. But, in the 59th minute, the Italians stunned their hosts when Lucarelli headed home from a corner kick to give Livorno the lead and potentially the goal they needed to advance. Daniel Niculae forced a save out of Marco Amelia with 10 minutes left to play, but the goal seemed to knock the wind out of Auxerre and they never got any closer and were out of the competition. Rangers - Partizan 1-0 With Maccabi Haifa finished with their four games, Rangers needed just a point to seal top spot in Group A against bottom side Partizan, and the Serbs gave them a surprisingly strong fight. But in the end, Rangers were the better side and they broke Partizan's resistance in the 55th minute when defender Alan Hutton rose to put his head to a free kick from Nacho Novo. Partizan late on had a shot cleared off the line to deny them a result on the night at Ibrox. |
