A change in Austria's fortunes

1 December 2006 11:04

VIENNA, Dec 1 (SW) – Austria’s fortunes in football have changed over the past few months.

Their recent results have given their supporters hope that by the time the start of UEFA EURO 2008 championships begin in Austria and Switzerland they will be competitive.

Under coach Josef Hickersberger they began the year dismally losing to Canada, Croatia, Hungary and Venezuela.

This was followed up with a draw against Costa Rica.

First win of the year came against Liechtenstein. After being 0 – 1 down with twenty two minutes to go, they rallied back in fine style to eventually win the match 2 – 1.

Five days later they beat co – hosts for 2008 Switzerland 2 – 1 and followed this good victory up with another morale – boosting performance against Trinidad and Tobago which they won 4 – 1.

Already this year they have moved up eleven places in the FIFA World Rankings. They presently occupy 63rd place.
