ALKMAAR, Dec 17 (SW) - AZ Alkmaar remain second in the Dutch Eredivisie following a 2-0 win over FC Groningen.

The deadlock was broken by Gijs Luirink in the 26th minute and Danny Koevermans converted a penalty to double the lead in the 40th.

AZ have 39 points from 17 games, seven points less than PSV Eindhoven but one more than third-placed Ajax.
