MONACO, Aug 25 (SW) - UEFA Cup winners Sevilla have added the European Super Cup to their palmares, following a convincing 3-0 victory over Champions League winners FC Barcelona.
Sevilla were by far the motivated side in Monaco, and needed only six minutes to take the lead. A shot by Luis Fabiano was blocked by goalkeeper Victor Valdés, but Renato stood in the right place to score in the rebound. Things got worse for Barcelona in the last minute of the first half. Jesús Navas headed the ball into the penalty area and Frederic Kanouté did well to direct the ball past Valdés for 2-0. The third and last goal came in the 90th minute, when referee Stefano Farina awarded Sevilla a penalty due to a Puyol foul on Puerta. Enzo Maresca took the responsibility and his powerful strike flew past the goalkeeper to set the final score to 3-0. It is Sevilla's first Super Cup trophy, while Barcelona had already won the cup in 1992 and in 1997. |
