SWANSEA, Aug 15 (SW) - Bulgaria traveled to Swansea on Tuesday and held Wales to a 0-0 draw as both sides prepared for the start of their upcoming Euro 2008 qualifying campaigns.
New Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov looked in fantastic form early on and the Welsh line of defense was constantly threatened by the former Bayer Leverkusen forward. The Welsh felt slighted when Robert Earnshaw's shot in the second half looked to be saved by Dimitar Ivankov outside of the penalty area, but no action was taken by the referee. Berbatov was a thorn in the side of the Welsh defense all night and looked dangerous every time he touched the ball and twice nearly gave Bulgaria the breakthrough in the second half. Craig Davies nearly snatched victory for John Toshack's men later in the second half when his shot forced Ivankov to touch it over the bar. Slovenia - Israel 1-1 An exciting finish saw Slovenia come from a goal down to earn a draw at home against Israel in a friendly match in Celje. After 81 minutes of scoreless football, West Ham United's Yossi Benayoun put Israel in front, but the hosts responded less than two minutes later as Goran Sukalo slotted home the equalizer. Slovenia next play Bulgaria in a Euro 2008 qualifier on 6 September, while Israel have games at Estonia and against Andorra to open their qualifying campaign next month. Slovakia - Malta 3-0 New Rangers signing Filip Sebo had himself quite a night as he notched a hat-trick in Slovakia's victory over Malta in Bratislava. Sebo, who joined the Glasgow side just a few weeks ago, opened the scoring after the half-hour mark, leaving Slovakia with a 1-0 lead at half-time. He would extend the advantage to 2-0 with 15 minutes to play before sealing his treble in the dying stages of the match. Next up for Slovakia is a Euro 2008 qualifying match against Cyprus, while Malta's next outing is at home against Bosnia-Herzegovina. |
