TORSHAVN, Aug 1 (SW) - Fenerbahce became the first to book a berth in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying after defeating B36 Tórshavn 5-0 on the night and 9-0 on aggregate.
Fenerbahçe, who played without both Stephen Appiah and Tümer Metin, faced tough resistance from the Faroese for much of the first half of play, but Tuncay Sanli finally broke the deadlock just on the stroke of half-time. The side from Istanbul came out with vigor in the second half, extending their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Mehmet Yozgatli on 55 minutes, and Can Arat sealed off the game with 11 minutes to go. Semih Senturk and Murat Hacioglu then added late strikes to pile the misery on the tiny side from the island nation, and made new manager Zico two for two to start his stint at Fenerbahçe. The Turks move on now to face either Dynamo Kiev or Liepajas Metalurgs in the next round, the Ukrainians leading 4-1 after the first leg in Latvia.
