BUCHAREST, Aug 3 (SW) - In a second leg of a Champions League second round match played on Wednesday night between Steaua Bucharest and Slovenia’s NK Gorica the Steaua Portuguese goalkeeper Carlos Fernandes broke a photographer’s camera.
Television pictures showed Fernandes hitting the camera of local sport daily, Gazeta Sporturilor's photographer who was trying to take shots of the goalkeeper, who was obviously in some distress, sitting on the bench after having twisted his ankle during the pre-match warm-up.
The tension between Fernandes and the press has been brewing for some weeks now. Last month Carlos accused Romanian journalists of having an unfriendly disposition towards him because he was a foreigner.
Steaua players showed their support of their goalkeeper by also refusing to talk to local media in the past three weeks.
Steaua beat NK Gorica 3-0 with for a 5-0 aggregate victory and have now earned themselves a third qualifying round clash with Belgium's Standard Liege.
