MUNICH, Aug 3 (SW) - German champions Bayern Munich defeated Schalke 04 last night, advancing to the German League Cup final.
Bayern and Schalke played 90 minutes of exciting yet goalless football before the Munich match was decided on penalties.
Schalke missed their first two penalty kicks and Bayern hit all four, sending them through to the final.
"We played well at times," Bayern coach Felix Magath said after the match.
"But you could see we have a lot of work to do. We let in a lot of chances, but had quite a few good chances ourselves. It was an exciting match to watch for the spectators."
Bayern face last season’s runner-up Werder Bremen in the Leipzig final of the pre-season tournament which pits the top six teams from the previous season against one another.
