Aachen secure Bundesliga promotion

17 April 2006 06:08

FÜRTH, Apr 17 (SW) - A year after they announced their name to Europe with a nice run in the UEFA Cup, Alemannia Aachen will now take their game to the top flight in Germany, securing promotion to the Bundesliga after a Greuther Fürth loss secured their step up.

Greuther Fürth still have a chance at securing a top three spot in the II. Bundesliga as they sit six points back with four matches remaining, but a loss at relegation candidates Saarbrücken allowed Aachen to secure promotion before their game with Bochum on Monday.

The Aachen fans will most certainly be in a celebratory mood as the 2006/07 season will be Aachen's first in the top flight since they were relegated after the 1969/70 season after finishing at the bottom of the table.

Bochum could also lock up a return to the Bundesliga if they earn a point against Aachen. Energie Cottbus currently sit third with the afore-mentioned six-point gap on Greuther Fürth. Bochum were relegated just one season ago while Cottbus suffered the drop in 2003.
