EINDHOVEN, Apr 9 (SW) - PSV Eindhoven have won their 19th Dutch Eredivisie title. A draw against FC Groningen was enough to secure the overall victory.
Only if PSV had lost the match with Groningen, with main competitors AZ Alkmaar winning at Ajax in Amsterdam, it would have postponed the club's celebration. Groningen gave PSV a scare when in-form striker Erik Nevland opened the score after forty minutes had been played at the Philips stadium, but Peruvian Jefferson Farfán levelled in the first minute of the second half. The draw was enough for Guus Hiddink's side to secure the championship, and was also a good result for Groningen, who had already defeated the title defenders at home earlier this year. Even though PSV were trailing for a short amount of time, the pressure was not that high as a goal from Nourdin Boukhari put Ajax in the lead after 32 minutes, due to which AZ now had to score two goals to keep PSV away from the title. The difference between PSV and AZ now stands at ten points, with only two matches left to go. But Louis van Gaal's men could not score and the hosts took three valuable points. Ajax move into fifth place, which gives access to Champions League play-offs in the Netherlands. This at the expense of Groningen, who are now sixth. The championship is PSV's 19th ever. The first came in 1929, and PSV's longest streak uptil now has been from 1986 to 1989, winning four times in a row. In the last seven years however, PSV took the title five times, while Ajax won twice. This championship is a goodbye present for manager Guus Hiddink, who is expected to leave the team for Russia after the World Cup. |
