Netherlands: Ajax, Groningen advance to playoff final

ROTTERDAM, Apr 23 (SW) - Ajax moved onto the playoff final for a berth in Champions League after crushing Feyenoord while Groningen edged out AZ Alkmaar on aggregate.
Feyenoord - Ajax 2-4 Ajax win 7-2 on aggregate Ajax dominated the first leg of the tie on Thursday and got off to a flying start at De Kuip when Mauro Rosales gave them the lead on 33 minutes. Eredivisie leading scored Klaas-Jan Huntelaar then followed up six minutes later to make 5-0 on aggregate. Nourdin Boukhari's goal in the second half extended the Ajax advantage further before Dirk Kuyt finally pulled one back for the home side. Kuyt would score a second late on, but not before Nicolae Mitea got yet another goal for Ajax. AZ Alkmaar - Groningen 2-1 Groningen win 4-3 on aggregate Ajax will now face Groningen who surprisingly lifted second-placed AZ out of the playoffs after a Danny Buijs goal in the second half. Trailing 3-1 from Thursday, AZ got a goal closer to evening the scoreline when Danny Koevermans, and it appeared it was all going the right way for Louis van Gaal's men when Shota Arveladze scored in the 56th minute. Groningen fought vailiantly, though, and got a breakthough five minutes later when Buijs rose highest to head home and sent Groningen through. Ajax will host the first leg against Groningen this coming Wednesday with the return leg a week later in Groningen. The winner will advance to the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The loser of the tie will join AZ and Feyenoord in the UEFA Cup. |
