MUNICH, Apr 15 (SW) - Bayern Munich maintained their four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday as they defeated Arminia Bielefeld. Hamburg, meanwhile, kept the pace with a victory at Duisburg.
Bayern Munich - Arminia Bielefeld 2-0 It took the home side awhile to get on the scoreboard at Allianz Arena on Saturday, but Michael Ballack's goal in the 69th minute finally saw the leaders into the lead. With last week's loss to Werder Bremen behind them, Mehmet Scholl doubled the lead for Bayern just five minutes later to secure the victory. Duisburg - Hamburg 0-2 An own goal by Duisburg's Uwe Mohrle initially gave Hamburg the lead in the 24th minute before striker Ailton fired home six minutes later to extend the lead to two goals. An avenue opened up for Duisburg to come back when young Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong was sent off in the 39th minute, but Hamburg held on to claim the victory and keep their title hopes alive. Wolfsburg - Werder Bremen 1-1 Last week's win over Bayern must have also been behind Bremen as they slumped to a draw against relegation candidates Wolfsburg. Bremen went in front after just six minutes when Nelson Valdez gave the visitors the lead, but Wolfsburg came back in the 22nd minute as Stefan Schnoor equalized. The visitors had a golden opportunity to claim all three points when Facundo Quiroga was sent off for Wolfsburg in the 26th minute. They couldn't take advantage, however, and had to settle for a point. Schalke - Köln 1-1 Sitting second from the bottom of the table, young German striker Lukas Podolski gave Köln the lead on the stroke of half-time. It looked like the visitors would claim a massive three points, but Zlatan Bajramovic's goal with ten minutes left to play spared Schalke's blushes. Bayer Leverkusen - Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 Red-hot Simon Rolfes gave Leverkusen the lead in the 11th minute, and the advantage looked to be squarely in the home side's favor when Gladbach had Niels Oude Kamphuis dismissed in the 37th minute. Oliver Neuville, though, pulled a goal back for the ten-man visitors three minutes into the second half before Rolfes got the winner for Leverkusen six minutes from time. Hertha Berlin - Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Two sides still battling for a spot in Europe fought out a stalemate in the capital city as Hertha were held by Borussia Dortmund. Hertha sit sixth in the table with Dortmund two spots and six points back. Eintracht Frankfurt - Mainz 0-0 German Cup finalists Eintracht Frankfurt were held to a disappointing draw by Mainz, who are now three points above the relegation zone. If Kaiserslautern win on Sunday, that will pull them level on points with Mainz and Wolfsburg, but Mainz's goal difference is currently 19 better than Kaiserslautern and 14 better than Wolfsburg. |
