LEIPZIG, Dec 6 (SW) – World Football governing body FIFA have unveiled the 2006 World Cup group seedings ahead of Friday's group stage draw.
As expected, trophy holders Brazil, South-American rivals Argentina, as well as England, France, Italy, Mexico and Spain have been placed with Germany in the top eight seeds of the 2006 WC.
The final decision was unveiled today by FIFA’s World Cup Organising Committee in Leipzig, and was based on the performances of the last two World Cups (coefficient 1 for 1998, and 2 for 2002), and the FIFA rankings of the last three years.
The other pots were made up according to the remaining sides’ geographic locations, with Serbia and Montenegro (European side with the least number of points according to FIFA’s calculation) placed in a special pot on their own, and already set to be drawn in either Mexico, Brazil or Argentina’s group, in order to ensure a maximum number of two European nations per group.
The World Cup group stage draw will take place on Friday, between 9.20pm and 9.50pm, at Leipzig's Neue Messe exhibition centre.
