England: Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool win

LONDON, Dec 28 (SW) - Chelsea and Arsenal both added three points to their accounts on Wednesday, with wins over Manchester City and Portsmouth respectively. Liverpool meanwhile, were too strong for Everton in the Merseyside derby.

The matches Newcastle United - Charlton Athletic, Blackburn Rovers - Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers - Middlesbrough were postponed due to frozen pitches.

Manchester City - Chelsea 0-1

League leaders Chelsea were struggling at Manchester City, but finally managed to break the deadlock in the 78th minute. The only, and therefore decisive goal came from Joe Cole.

Birmingham City - Manchester United 2-2

Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy put the Red Devils in the lead after only five minutes, but the hosts levelled through Jamie Clapham in the 18th. Wayne Rooney restored the gap for Manchester United, scoring in the 54th minute. However, Birmingham rescued a point as Walter Pandiani set the score to 2-2 in the 78th minute.

Everton - Liverpool 1-3

European champions Liverpool faced Everton in the 202nd Merseyside derby. Peter Crouch opened the score for the Reds in the 11th minute, and captain Steven Gerrard netted the second seven minutes later.

James Beattie got one back for Everton in the 42nd minute, but his team was left without hope when Djibril Cissé scored for 1-3 in the 47th. Everton's Phil Neville was sent off in the 68th minute, and teammate Mikel Arteta followed in stoppage time.

West Bromwich Albion - Tottenham Hotspur 2-0

West Bromwich Albion surprised with a win over Tottenham Hotspur. The opening goal was scored by Nwankwo Kanu in the 23rd minute, and the Nigerian added a second in the 52nd minute to decide the match.

West Ham United - Wigan Athletic 0-2

Wigan continue to impress in the Premiership. At West Ham United, the season revelations achieved a 0-2 victory. Jason Roberts put the visitors ahead in the 44th minute, and Henri Camara doubled the lead just a minute later.

Arsenal - Portsmouth 4-0

Arsenal had an easy win over Portsmouth at Highbury stadium. Experienced striker Dennis Bergkamp opened the score after seven minutes, and Reyes added a second six minutes later. Frenchman Thierry Henry scored the third goal in the 37th minute and also converted a penalty kick in the 43rd.

Fulham - Aston Villa 3-3

Six goals, but no winner at Fulham versus Aston Villa. Brian McBride had his 13th-minute goal cancelled out by Luke Moore in the 29th minute, but Heidar Helguson restored Fulham's lead just three minutes later.

Liam Ridgewell levelled for the guests on the hour mark, but the American McBride then scored another to set the score to 3-2. Ridgewell however, went on to net another equalizer, for 3-3 in the 77th minute.
