PORTO, Apr 13 (SW) – According to sports newspaper ‘A Bola’, AZ Alkmaar manager Co Adriaanse is on the verge of landing a contract with Portuguese giants FC Porto.

Co Adriaanse had revealed he was not to extend his stay at Alkmaar another season earlier this year, the 57-year-old tactician admitting he was willing to look for a coaching position abroad.

“I don't think I can make this team any better next season,” Adriaanse had revealed.

“Next season I will not be working as coach in the Netherlands. I prefer a club abroad. Best would be a big team, or at least one that is willing to spend a lot of money on me,” he had added.

And it looks as if his wishes may be answered after Portuguese media linked the manager with a move to Superliga outfit FC Porto. The 2003/2004 Champions League champions, who have had two new managers since the departure of Jose Mourinho to Chelsea, have not had their best year this season, José Couceiro and his men currently finding themselves 4th in the table, 6 lengths behind league leaders Benfica.

Adriaanse could now promise to be FC Porto’s saviour, as the club board and the fans will be expecting much more next term following a disappointing season, especially on the European stage after a back-to-back UEFA CUP/Champions League double.

Meanwhile, Co Adriaanse will be hoping he and his AZ side can advance in this year’s UEFA Cup competition, following their 1-2 win over Villarreal in the first leg of the competition’s quarter-final.
