STUTTGART, Sep 15 (SW) - Sttugart came out winners in their UEFA Cup first-round, first leg match on Thursday, but Bayer Leverkusen were upset at home by Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia.
Stuttgart - Domzale 2-0 Stuttgart will be unhappy to have left the door open for a comeback by Slovenian side Domzale, although they thoroughly controlled the match at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion. Jon Dahl Tomasson put the home side in front just seven minutes in his first European match for his new club, having signed from AC Milan in the summer. Stuttgart had countless opportunities to pad their lead throughout the match, but it wasn't until the final moments of the match that Stuttgart finally pulled out a second goal when Christian Gentner fired in an insurance goal in the 89th minute. Bayer Leverkusen - CSKA Sofia 0-1 Bayer Leverkusen have one foot out of the UEFA Cup at the first hurdle after they were upset at the BayArena on an early goal by Yordan Todorov. CSKA, knocked out of the Champions League qualifying rounds by Liverpool, came out early against the 1988 UEFA Cup winners as Todorov gave his side 1-0 lead on 15 minutes when he slid past Hans-Jörg Butt. Leverkusen looked nothing short of sluggish, but they had a couple of chances to equalize in the second half through Marko Babic and Dimitar Berbatov, but both failed on their chances and the Bulgarians will go into the second leg with a win and an away goal. APOEL Nicosia - Hertha Berlin 0-1 APOEL Nicosia nearly held out long enough to send the second leg of their tie with Hertha Berlin back to Olympiastadion scoreless, but a late penalty by Marcelinho lifted the Germans to victory. Substitute Sasa Jovanovic felled Hertha's Yildiray Bastürk in the area and Brazilian Marcelinho stepped up to the spot and beat goalkeeper Michalis Morfis. Hamburg - FC København 1-1 Hamburg were held to a disappointing draw at home on Thursday as FC København got a quick equalizer after Hamburg took a late lead in the first half. New signing Rafael van der Vaart put the Germans in front on 37 minutes, but three minutes later Elrio van Heerden put the Danes on level terms and put them in good position for the second leg in two weeks.
