UEFA Cup: Besiktas, Bolton play to draw; Zenit take down Guimarães

ISTANBUL/ST. PETERSBURG, Oct 20 (SW) - Besiktas and Bolton Wanderers played out a draw at the Inönü stadium in one of the highlight ties of Matchday 1 in Group H. Elsewhere, Zenit St. Petersburg beat Vitória Guimarães in Russia.

Brazilian striker Ailton gave Mehmet Eksi's side a lead just seven minutes into the match, firing in after a feed by Tümer Metin, who was Turkey's hero against Albania in their final World Cup qualifier.

However, the lead would last on 29 minutes when Mexican international striker Jared Borgetti took a ball from El-Hadji Diouf before powering a shot beyond Iván Córdoba.

Zenit St. Petersburg - Vitória Guimarães 2-1

The Russian side claimed three points on Thursday as both sides finished the match with ten men.

Leonel Medeiros was dismissed on 37 minutes for the Portuguese side as he earned his second yellow card of the match for hauling down Igor Denisov in the area. Olexander Spivak then stepped up to the spot and hit a shot beyond Nilson for a 1-0 lead.

Andrei Arshavin doubled the advanatage nine minutes after the restart when he gathered a cross by Vladislav Radimov and fired home from just outside the area, but the visitors pulled a goal back five minutes later as João Neca fired in from distance.

The Portuguese side got no closer and Zenit had Radimov sent off with five minutes to play when he too earned his second yellow card of the match.
