TURIN/MUNICH, Nov 22 (SW) - Juventus and Bayern Munich have both secured their qualification for the next round in the Champions League. The Italians defeated Club Brugge while Bayern were far too strong for Rapid Wien.
Juventus - Club Brugge 1-0
A draw was enough for Juventus to advance to the next round. The first half against Belgian visitors Club Brugge was rather uneventful, although David Trezeguet was close to breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute. The Frenchman's header hit the post, after which goalkeeper Butina was able to control.
The Italians were more inspired in the second half, and pressurized the opposing defense. There were chances for Emerson and Nedved, but neither managed to put the ball past the goalkeeper.
But 'Juve' did finally take the lead in the 80th minute. Striker Alessandro Del Piero got in-between two Belgian defenders to head home from a Pavel Nedved cross.
Bayern Munich - Rapid Wien 4-0
Bayern Munich needed 21 minutes to open the score against Rapid. A pass from Roy Makaay reached Deisler, who did well too strike home from just outside the penalty area.
The Bavarians continued to push for a second goal after the break, and Ali Karimi took the honour of doubling the lead. The Iranian controlled a Schweinsteiger corner with his chest, and volleyed past goalkeeper Payer.
The Austrians were not capable of competing with Bayern's skills, and the Germans added another goal in the 72nd minute. Dutch striker Roy Makaay received a through-ball from Schweinsteiger, and struck for 3-0.
Makaay was visibly inspired by his goal, and scored another in the 77th minute. While the forward is having difficulties in the Bundesliga, he now stood in the right position to score from a Demichelis pass.
Both Bayern and Juventus have 12 points from five games, while Brugge are stuck in third place with six points. The Belgians are certain of UEFA Cup participation, as Rapid are last with zero points.
