CORK, Nov 19 (SW) – Cork City FC have defeated league rivals Derry City FC 2-0 on the last day of the Irish domestic campaign to become this season’s Eircom League champions.
As Cork were trailing Derry by one unit ahead of last night’s title decider, nothing but all three points were needed to the hosts to claim their first long-awaited title since 1993, and deny Derry of a repeat performance of the 1996/97 season.
And it all went according to script for Damien Richardson and his men, as John O'Flynn, only back from a groin injury, fired his side into the lead after only 18 minutes of play, before Liam Kearney made it later 2-0 (61’) to send the 7,500 Cork fans onto cloud nine.
Cork City, who finished the 2003 season on third spot, then the 2004 season as runners-up, are now rewarded for their hard work, and mark Irish soccer history by putting an end to the run of the various Dublin-based outfits which had clinched the last 8 crowns.
Richardson and his men will now turn their focus to the FAI Cup final, as a win against Drogheda on the 4th of December could hand them a historical double.
