AUXERRE, Jul 27 (SW) - Olympique Lyonnais have won their fourth consecutive French Super Cup, beating AJ Auxerre 4-1 at l'Abbé-Deschamps to open the season with yet another trophy.
A penalty from Hatem Ben Arfa put Ligue 1 champions Lyon ahead in the third minute, but Lionel Mathis levelled for Auxerre, who were playing on home soil, just five minutes later.
From here on, it was the Norwegian former Valencia and AS Roma striker John Carew to dominate the match. In the 34th minute, he restored Lyon's lead and another two were added in the 68th and 73rd for a clear victory.
Lyon, now led by their new coach Gerard Houllier, have now won the Super Cup four times in a row, after a lost final (3-0 against Saint-Etienne) in 1967. 35 years later, they won their first Super Cup at the expense of Lorient, and Auxerre followed a year later. Last year, Paris Saint-Germain were defeated on penalties.
Auxerre have only played this match twice so far, and lost to Lyon on both occasions. In 1997 however, they won the trophy without playing: Bad weather forced the organisation to suspend the game, which meant that Auxerre and Metz had to share the Cup.
