SAO PAULO, July 15 (SW) – Brazil outfit Sao Paulo have won the Copa Libertadores after sealing a 5-1 aggregate win over league rivals Atletico Paranaense.
The cup favourites had been unable to take an early advantage in first leg, both sides having held each other to a 1-1 stalemate, an own goal from Durval cancelling team mate Aloisio’s early effort.
But more than 70,000 fans packed in the ever-boiling Morumbi stadium of Sao Paulo were hoping to see their side use their home advantage and seal a long-awaited victory in South America's equivalent of the Champions League.
‘The local fans were not left disappointed’ might sound like an understatement, as their side clinched an impressive 4-0 win on the night, Amoroso (17’), Fabao (53’), Luizao (71’) and Diego Tardelli (89’) making Atletico Paranaense pay with four consecutive efforts.
Sao Paulo will now go to Japan next December alongside European champions Liverpool FC to play the Club World Championship.
