STRASBOURG/ROME, Dec 14 (SW) - Red Star Belgrade wasted a secure lead at Strasbourg and allowed Basel to qualify for the next round in the UEFA Cup. The Swiss join Strasbourg and AS Roma.
Strasbourg - Red Star Belgrade 2-2 Dusan Basta and Ardijan Djokaj gave Red Star a safe lead with goals in the 34th and 63rd minutes respectively. A win would have been enough to qualify for the next round, but Strasbourg came back with a goal from Kevin Gameiro in the 79th minute, and the same player levelled in stoppage time. AS Roma - Basel 3-1 Basel's future mainly depended on the match between Strasbourg and Red Star, as the Swiss side could not compete with AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. Rodrigo Taddei put the Romans ahead in the 12th minute, and captain Francesco Totti added a second just before half time. A third goal was scored by Shabani Nonda in the 49th minute. Mladen Petric got one back for Basel in the 78th. Basel now had to hope for Strasbourg to do something against Red Star. As those two teams drew 2-2, Basel advance with 6 points. Strasbourg win the group with 8, and Roma are second with 7 points. For Red Star (4 points) and Norwegian side Tromso (3 points), the European season is now officially over. |
