TRABZON, Aug 3 (SW) - Cypriot champions Anorthosis kept on their magical run, reaching the third qualifying round of the Champions League, defeating Turkish side Trabzonspor 3-2 on aggregate despite a 1-0 defeat in Turkey on Wednesday.
Trabzonspor - Anorthosis 1-0 Anorthosis win 3-2 on aggregate Last week, these two sides contested the first-ever match between Greek Cypriot and Turkish teams and Anorthosis made history, but Trabzonspor got an away goal and hoped to capitalize on that. With 40 minutes on the clock, last season's Turkish Super Lig topscorer Fatih Tekke converted a header from a Gökdeniz Karadeniz cross for a 1-0 lead, pulling Trabzonspor to within one strike of going ahead in the tie. When Anorthosis had Nicolaos Katsavakis sent off with 16 minutes to go for his second yellow card, Trabzonspor turned up the heat and they thought they had their crucial goal when Celaleddin Koçak sent his header into the net, but it was disallowed for offside. The Turks failed to score another and Anorthosis found themselves getting ready for a massive tie against Scottish champions Rangers with the first leg in Nicosia next week. CSKA Sofia - KF Tirana 2-0 CSKA Sofia win 4-0 on aggregate Bulgarian champions CSKA Sofia set up a third qualifying round tie with European champions Liverpool after they easily disposed of Albanian side KF Tirana in Sofia. Guillaume Zadi quickly put the tie out of reach for KF Tirana when he headed in a cross by Hristo Yanev just three minutes in to put his side in front on the night. Yordan Todorov added a goal late on, converting a pass from Petar Dimitrov to put the punctuation on the match. Thun - Dynamo Kiev 1-0 Thun win 3-2 on aggregate Ukrainian runners-up last season, Dynamo Kiev crashed out of European competition this season after falling to Swiss runners-up Thun on Wednesday. In the first match at the new Stade Suisse de Wankdorf, Thun produced a famous result, getting a header from Tiago Bernardi late on to ensure Thun didn't need away goals to go through to face Swedish side Malmö in the next round. Brøndby - Dinamo Tbilisi 3-1 Brøndby win 5-1 on aggregate The champions of Denmark went comfortably through to the third qualifying round to face Ajax after completing their demolition of Georgian champions Dinamo Tbilisi on Wednesday night. Kasper Lorentzen opened the scoring for Michael Laudrup's Brøndby side in the ninth minute then completed his first-half double with three minutes to go in the first term. Dinamo Tbilisi managed to get on the board in the tie when Sandro Iashvili scored in the 66th minute, but Jonas Kamper's 86th minute goal restored the advantage and capped off the night. Rapid Wien - F91 Dudelange 3-2 Rapid Wien win 9-3 on aggregate After a comprehensive 6-1 win in Luxembourg a week ago, the Austrian champions fell behind early by not one but two goals. Cemil Tosun's seventh-minute own goal made it 1-0 to Dudelange before Thomas Gruszczynski doubled the advantage in the 38th minute. Although Dudelange really had no chance of getting four more goals to win the tie, Rapid took no chances and came out firing when Axel Lawaree pulled one back two minutes into the scond half. Lawaree and Matthias Dollinger added goals in the final nine minutes of the game to increase the final margin in the tie, sending Rapid through to face Lokomotiv Moscow in the next round. Hajduk Split - Debrecen 0-5 Debrecen win 8-0 on aggregate The Hungarian champions Debrecen were never in danger from the opening whistle in Croatia as Peter Halmosi scored just two minutes in to add on to Debrecen's 3-0 first-leg win. Zsombor Kerekes and Halmosi again made it 3-0 before the break and then Ibrahim Sidi Be and Zoltan Kiss tacked on the fourth and fifth goals in the final quarter-hour against a helpless Hajduk Split side who were dumped in a bad way. Debrecen now get a dream tie against Manchester United in the third qualifying round. |
