Liverpool beat CSKA Moscow for Super Cup victory

26 August 2005 23:22

MONACO, Aug 26 (SW) - European champions Liverpool have conquered their first trophy of the season, beating CSKA Moscow for the Super Cup at Louis II stadium in Monaco.

UEFA Cup winners CSKA Moscow took the lead after 28 minutes when star player Daniel Carvalho scored from the left side of the penalty area.

But substitute Djibril Cissé finally levelled for Liverpool in the 81st minute. A CSKA defender tried to clear but allowed the forward to move past the goalkeeper and score the equalizer.

Twelve minutes into extra time, Cissé scored his second, taking advantage of chaos in the Russian defense. The Spaniard Luis Garcia added a third and decisive goal seven minutes later.

Liverpool won the European Super Cup twice before: In 1977, Hamburger SV were beaten 7-1 on aggregate, and Bayern Munich were defeated 3-2 in 2001.
