Spain: Barcelona capture Super Cup despite loss at Camp Nou

21 August 2005 03:28

BARCELONA, Aug 21 (SW) - Spanish champions Barcelona captured the 2005 SuperCopa 4-2 on aggregate over Real Betis despite losing the second leg 2-1 at Camp Nou.

Following a top-notch 3-0 win in Seville last week, Barcelona appeared to have the upper hand a quarter-hour in when Samuel Eto'o took advantage of a Betis defensive error to put the Catalans in front.

Betis pulled level less than ten minutes later when striker Dani met a perfect cross by Xisco and volleyed into the Barça net for 1-1.

Dani put Betis in front four minutes later, capitalizing on a poor clearance by Oleguer Presas before hitting in with his right foot.

The good effort by Betis will give them confidence ahead of their second leg Champions League qualifier at Monaco on Tuesday. Betis lead 1-0 on aggregate.

The triumph was Barcelona's sixth SuperCopa win although manager Frank Rijkaard would have rather secured the first trophy of the season with a win.
