France: Lyon join PSG, Bordeaux and Nantes at top of the table

8 August 2005 11:06

LYON, Aug 8 (SW) – A single effort against Strasbourg of the ever-impressive Norwegian striker John Carew helped defending champions l’OL join PSG, Bordeaux and Nantes at the top of the French league table.

The prolific striker, who netted at least one effort per game with Lyon since landing in France, squeezed a tight-angle strike in the 26th minute of his side's encounter against Strasbourg and helped l'OL collect their second win in two games, following their narrow 1-2 win away to Le Mans last weekend.

Bordeaux also collected a narrow 1-0 home win against newly-promoted Nancy, Moroccan striker Chamakh making the best of an early effort after only fives minutes into the game.

Last season’s strugglers FC Nantes pleased their manager Serge Le Dizet with an impressive 0-3 win away to favourites Rennes, with Fae (14’), Diallo (79’) and Bamogo (87’) sealing their side’s victory while PSG’s Edouard Cisse scored his second goal of the season away to Sochaux (52’) to extend the Parisian side’s 100% record.

Meanwhile, Marseille got a harsh return to the domestic league’s reality with a trip away to Lens. Despite having impressed during the week against Lazio in the InterToto, Jean Fernandez’ men were left pointless for the second time this season, following their 2-0 defeat at the Felix Bollaert stadium (Keita 38’, and Hilton 61’).
