Negredo runs back with the ball and eventually draws a foul from Debuchy, giving City the chance to waste more time and close the game out.
119'
Y. Cabaye gets yellow.
Into the last minute, then, and it's rather empty and quiet inside the stadium. City have the ball and are just running down the clock.
118'
Sissoko does really well to track back and dispossess Dzeko after a sloppy touch, but the hosts don't rush to counter. It's spread wide to Ben Arfa, who gets to the by-line but fires his cross too hard and it goes out for a throw.
117'
JUST WIDE FROM SILVA!! Dzeko advances towards the box and flicks the ball to Silva, who works the ball on to his left with some excellent footwork, before driving a shot past Krul's upright.
116'
M. Debuchy gets yellow.
Negredo charges forward down the left but is taken out by Debuchy - who was still retreating from the previous attack - and the Newcastle man goes into the book.
115'
Sissoko cross from the left and Debuchy does well to win a header at the far post, but Lescott is there again to head away.
114'
Just over five minutes left on Tyneside. Ben Arfa could've set up an interesting finale but it's now looking too far back for Newcastle.
113'
OFF THE LINE!! That nearly made things interesting! Sissoko fires in a cross from the right and it comes out to the far post for Ben Arfa, who hits a sweet left-footed volley across goal, but Lescott is there to clear from behind his goalkeeper and maintain their two-goal lead.
112'
The stands are rapidly emptying inside St James' Park. The fans seem to have resigned too. Newcastle have possession but are taking their time.
111'
Sissoko plays the ball into Cisse on the edge of the box, and the striker tries to turn and shoot but Lescott is tight on him and manages to clear the ball.
Minute
Description
110'
There's not too much urgency from Newcastle at the moment. Perhaps they're keeping an eye on Saturday's early match against Chelsea in the Premier League.
109'
CLOSE!! Milner finds Navas with an excellent diagonal ball forward, and the winger squares it to Silva. The Spaniard plays it back to Dzeko, who flicks it back out to Milner, and the midfielder sees his drilled shot deflected behind.
108'
Tiote gives it away in midfield and Milner picks it up before spreading it wide to Navas, but instead of attacking he elects to go backwards and hold possession.
107'
Newcastle have the ball in defence and City are just sitting back. This could be 15 minutes of possession for the hosts with Pellegrini's men happy to sit on their two-goal cushion.
106'
Newcastle start the second half of extra time. Can they make a dramatic comeback?
105' +1
That's HALF TIME in EXTRA TIME and Man City look to have settled the tie with two goals in just over five minutes, after Pantilimon kept things level with a fine save from Cisse. Just 15 minutes left for the hosts to get back in this.
105'
E. Džeko has scored a goal for Manchester City!
DZEKO SCORES!! IT'S 2-0!! Milner plays an excellent one-two with Silva before sliding a fantastic pass through the middle for Dzeko, who takes the ball around Krul before slotting home to double the visitors' lead.
104'
Sissoko brings down Silva in midfield and the visitors have possession once more. We're rapidly approaching the end of this first period of extra time.
103'
Newcastle are seeing all of the possession now. City look content to sit back and protect this lead. Debuchy fires in an early cross but Pantilimon plucks it out of the air comfortably.
102'
There's another fine cross from Ben Arfa, this time from the right, and Cisse tries to bring it down with an outstretched leg but can only give it to the City defence.
101'
Chance! Ben Arfa fires in a fantastic cross from the right-hand side looking for Cisse, but it flicks off a City head and goes wide of the goal.
100'
Newcastle need a quick response. Five minutes left until the break in extra time.
99'
Álvaro Negredo has scored a goal for Manchester City!
NEGREDO SCORES!! CITY LEAD!! Silva plays wide to Dzeko, who drives down the edge of the box before squaring it to the edge of the six-yard box, and Negredo gets there first to sweep the ball under Krul and into the net.
98'
Garcia spreads the ball wide for Navas, and the winger floats in a good cross, which Dzeko meets but can only glance a header well off target and behind for a goal kick.
97'
Either the defenders are playing high lines or are just too tired to track back. First Negredo then Ben Arfa are caught offside in quick succession.
96'
Newcastle are dominating possession in extra time so far. Navas wins the ball off Cabaye but the hosts quickly win it back; there's a lot of pressure in the midfield.
95'
Zabaleta is double-teamed by Anita and Tiote and ends up on the floor after a robust challenge. To make it worse, the hosts get the throw and have possession.
94'
Cisse is through again but this time the flag goes up for offside. Will he come to rue that missed chance?
93'
Dzeko is almost through at the other end as Negredo plays an excellent ball behind Yanga-Mbiwa, but the defender and Krul combine well to win the ball back for the hosts.
92'
CISSE MUST SCORE!! How is it not 1-0? Ben Arfa plays a fantastic ball over the top and Cisse is through on goal. The striker brings it down and pokes a shot away but Pantilimon spreads brilliantly to divert the ball behind for a corner.
91'
Extra time is underway in Newcastle - as it is in north London where it's Tottenham 1-1 Hull - and the visitors get us started.
90' +5
That's FULL TIME and we're going into EXTRA TIME at St James' Park after neither side was able to break the deadlock. It's not been a good game.
90' +4
It's City's turn to waste a free kick, as Zabaleta fires the ball forward but it goes straight through to Krul.
90' +3
Newcastle have a free kick which Krul launches forward but it comes straight back, and Yanga-Mbiwa has to head out for a throw. Extra time looks inevitable...
90' +2
David Silva gets yellow.
That's nice from Gouffran! He charges back to his own corner flag and holds off Dzeko before producing a very cheeky backheel to help Newcastle clear.
90' +1
Navas crosses in early and Krul goes up but misjudges the ball. Fortunately for the goalkeeper it hits Negredo and goes out for a goal kick to the hosts.
90'
It looks like Gouffran was offside for that chance, so he's let off. Anita tries to play an early ball in but Pantilimon catches in plenty of space, as we enter four minutes' added time.
89'
SHOULD BE A WINNER!! Newcastle take a short corner and Cabaye fires in an inswinging cross, which Gouffran flicks on and it goes agonisingly wide of the post with Cisse at full stretch trying to reach it.
88'
Chance for City! Kolarov crosses high from the right and the Bosnia striker heads back across goal. Krul palms it away but straight to Silva, although the City man can only volley it high up in the air and Newcastle clear.
87'
Ben Arfa fouls Milner on the near touchline and City have possession again. It's still pretty quiet in the stadium but you can definitely sense the tension now.
86'
Debuchy swings in a deep cross and Zabaleta heads it out wide. Navas chases but is clipped by Cisse, although he goes down somewhat theatrically. City win the free kick though.
85'
So nearly through! Cabaye almost sets Cisse away in the box with a pass through the middle, but it's just cut out. Newcastle are growing once more as we head for the finish.
84'
Cisse has been very quiet tonight but he tries a trademark wondergoal, volleying from way out on the left flank, but Pantilimon saves it easily.
83'
P. Zabaleta enters the game and replaces M. Richards.
There's another sub for Newcastle as substitute Dummett is taken off for Hatem Ben Arfa. Pardew is obviously worried about the pace down that flank.
82'
Richards trots off the pitch and looks confused as to why he has to go off, despite receiving treatments. Pellegrini then makes sure he has to go off as he throws on Pablo Zabaleta.
81'
H. Ben Arfa enters the game and replaces P. Dummett.
Richards is down with cramp and after several "should I or shouldn't I?" moments from both Tiote and Anita, Newcastle put the ball out of play so the physio can come on.
80'
Ten minutes to go. Can we have a goal please? City are looking more likely to score now but have still not troubled Krul.
79'
Silva drives forward and gets into the box, but Williamson comes across well and plays it behind for a corner. The pressure is really building now.
78'
NEGREDO SHOULD SCORE!! The striker exchanges passes with Silva and receives the ball after a lovely flick by Dzeko, but Negredo takes one touch too many and closes down the angle before seeing his shot deflected behind. Really should have done better, there.
77'
It's Newcastle's turn to find space on the flank as Dummett gets down the left and whips an early ball in, but Boyata is first to it and hacks away for a throw to the hosts.
76'
Milner gets forward on the right this time, and has plenty of support but his cross is played behind by Yanga-Mbiwa and City have a corner which is cleared, but the visitors retain possession.
75'
Wide from Dzeko! Navas finally gets one-on-one against the full-back, and strolls past Dummett before whipping a cross in. Dzeko gets in front of the defender at the near post, but can only head the ball wide.
74'
City have possession in their own half as we approach 15 minutes to go. It's not been the most inspiring of halves, but there's plenty of time for a goal.
73'
Newcastle's captain is back on his feet and walks gingerly off the pitch, but should be able to carry on.
72'
It's actually Tiote who's come off worse, having had the bulky frame of Micah Richards land on his leg. The midfielder is being put through some stretches by the physio at the moment, and the other players have a chance for a breather.
71'
Ouch, that looks rather painful for Richards as he gets caught in a Newcastle sandwich, going head first into Tiote's knee after being pushed by Gouffran.
70'
Cabaye has his first involvement of the match as Newcastle break, receiving the ball 35 yards out and - amid many cries of "shoot!" from the crowd - fires wide from distance.
69'
Tiote recovers well to dispossess Milner after an error in midfield, but City press forward again. Anita then battles hard to win possession and set Newcastle going on the break.
68'
Boyata meets a long ball but his clearance is intercepted by Sissoko, who drives forward before firing a deflected shot from 25 yards which Pantilimon gathers easily.
67'
Y. Cabaye enters the game and replaces Shola Ameobi.
Yohan Cabaye is given a run out by Pardew, then, as he replaces Ameobi. The hosts are just starting to run out of steam so will be hoping the Frenchman can inject some energy into the side.
66'
Pantilimon's goal kick is headed back towards him by Debuchy, and Ameobi chases but ends up fouling Lescott.
64'
David Silva enters the game and replaces J. Rodwell.
And here is David Silva, who replaces Rodwell. The Spain international's quality could be exactly what the visitors need right now.
63'
SHOULD HAVE SCORED!! Navas chases a long ball forward and Krul comes out but misdjudges it and the winger steals it away. He turns back and finds Milner who shoots first time from the right-hand corner of the box, but his shot goes over with Krul still scrambling back.
62'
We're entering the realm of substitutions now. City have plenty of talent available; David Silva and Samir Nasri are both potential game-changers.
60'
Boyata beats Ameobi in the air but can only head it straight to Tiote. He then does well to win the ball back but gives it to the Newcastle midfielder again, and it's worked to Sissoko who blazes a shot high and wide from 25 yards.
59'
Navas drives down the right-hand side but Gouffran chases back brilliantly to stop the cross and force a corner. Newcastle have doubled up well against the pacy winger tonight.
58'
Good chance for Newcastle as Ameobi meets Debuchy's cross but can only flick it out to the far side of the box. Gouffran collects and cuts back on to his right before whipping in a danerous ball, but it's too close to Pantilimon and the City shot-stopper claims easily.
56'
It's still very quiet inside the stadium. There hasn't been much to cheer about so far, and you get the feeling no-one wants to hang around beyond 90 minutes.
55'
Boyata wins the corner in the air but it goes out towards the left. Negredo does well to keep it in play and the ball is whipped back in for Richards who rises high, but so does his header.
54'
Yanga-Mbiwa heads away a long ball but it comes out to Navas, who looks for a team-mate in the six-yard box but the Newcastle defender clears for a corner.
53'
It's clearly the battle of the goalkeepers at the moment. Pantilimon's giant frame makes short work of a Newcastle corner as he catches comfortably.
52'
Good goalkeeping from Krul! Navas advances down the right-hand side and cuts back on to his left foot before whipping in a dangerous ball, but Krul is out brilliantly to snatch it out of the air.
51'
SAVED!! Some good passing from the Magpies sees Dummett square in to Ameobi, who lays it on to Anita, and the midfielder drives a long-range effort at goal, but it's a comfortable stop for Pantilimon despite good power on the shot.
50'
Newcastle win a throw deep down the right, but what's this? Debuchy has to climb over the advertising boards and down the exit to retrieve the ball! Incredible stuff! He then takes the throw and the hosts keep possession.
49'
Richards launches a free kick forward from his own half looking for Negredo, but Williamson watches it closely and heads away.
48'
I swear there are more empty seats than there were at the start of the game. Fans keeping warm at the bar, perhaps?
47'
City win an early corner and Milner plays it short to Navas, who tries to return the ball with a cheeky flick, but it goes straight past him and into Newcastle possession. Dummett gets forward and whips in a cross but Pantilimon comes out to claim with authority.
46'
P. Dummett enters the game and replaces M. Haïdara.
Man City kick things off again as the second half gets underway in Newcastle. Paul Dummett is on for Haidara who has a hamstring issue, but no tactical changes yet.
45' +3
There's just time for Tiote to pick up a silly yellow card as he goes straight through the back of Negredo in midfield. A stupid challenge really, especially as we're about to go in for the break.
45' +2
C. Tioté gets yellow.
Anita drives another flat ball in and Pantilimon doesn't get a convincing punch on it. Ameobi tries to volley towards goal but Lescott manages to clear the ball.
45' +1
We're into two minutes of stoppage time and Newcastle have a chance here as Boyata completely fluffs a clearance, slicing the ball behind for a corner.
45'
Good play from Richards! Williamson heads forward and the City full-back dashes in to steal the ball and continues forward with a powerful run, but his shot from 25 yards doesn't match the earlier skill and it slices well wide.
43'
It's pretty quiet inside the stadium now. Both the fans and the players seem ready for the half to end and a chance to recover some energy.
42'
Dzeko gets into some space on the right-hand side and crosses towards the far post for Negredo, who tries an ambitious first-time left-footed volley, but it flies high up into the stands. Top marks for effort, but not for execution.
41'
Navas slides an excellent pass through for Rodwell on the right-hand side of the box, and the midfielder fires a dangerous ball across the six-yard box, but no City player had made the run and Newcastle clear.
40'
City have had just one shot tonight, and haven't forced a save from Tim Krul yet. Can they test the Newcastle goalkeeper before the break?
39'
Can't quite reach it! Anita fires in a flat ball and Cisse stretches out a long leg to meet it at the far post, but he can't get on the end of it and City have a goal kick.
38'
Javi García gets yellow.
The referee does indeed brandish the yellow card for Garcia, and Newcastle have a good chance to fire in a dangerous ball here.
37'
A couple of the players have already changed boots this evening. It always seems odd that they pick the wrong ones! Meanwhile, Garcia is in trouble after bundling over Haidara, who was at full speed down the left-hand side.
36'
Richards does brilliantly to chase an overhit pass through from Negredo, but then seems to forget the ball as he turns and Yanga-Mbiwa can easily step in and clear.
35'
It's all Newcastle at the moment; the hosts really have their tails up. Just 10 minutes left until the break, though, and you feel they need to take advantage of this pressure while they can.
34'
ANITA SHOULD DO BETTER!! Newcastle take a quick throw down the right and Cisse's cross is met by Gouffran, whose header is blocked by Boyata. It comes straight out to Anita, who volleys wide from just inside the box. That was a really good chance.
33'
Garcia challenges Tiote in midfield and concedes a free kick, although it looked like the faintest of hands on the back. A soft free kick, that.
32'
DISALLOWED!! Anita swings in the free kick and Cisse heads at goal from the near post. It hits Boyata and comes back to the striker, who fires across goal and Ameobi prods in from close range, but from an offside position.
31'
Newcastle win a free kick on the right as Milner is penalised for handball. The home fans up the noise level slightly as they sense their side is on top at the moment.
30'
SAVED!! Sissoko sets a move forward and it's spread wide to Gouffran, who fires in a cross from the left. Sissoko's first effort is blocked but Ameobi has another go, volleying low across goal and forcing a good save from Pantilimon at full stretch.
28'
Newcastle resume play with a drop ball and Krul fires it back to Pantilimon in the customary piece of sporting play. Milner looks alright to continue, too.
27'
Negredo goes up for the set piece but Williamson heads away. Milner heads it back in but is clattered by Yanga-Mbiwa and stays down, so play stops for the England international to get treatment.
26'
The visitors are just starting to grow stronger now. They're passing it around inside the Newcastle half instead of their own. Navas tries to get a cross in from the right but Haidara blocks and it goes for a corner.
25'
City have a chance on the break and it's spread wide to Milner, who pushes into the box from the left-hand side, but can't produce a decent cross and shanks the ball behind for a goal kick.
24'
Navas lifts an excellent ball into the box looking for Negredo, but Williamson manages to head the ball clear. Newcastle press forward and Tiote looks for Ameobi with an ambitious diagonal ball which is headed away.
23'
The full-back fires the ball in hard but his cross fails to clear the first defender. It's not quite coming off in the final third for either side so far.
22'
Milner brings the ball down on the right for Newcastle and Haidara flies in to dispossess the midfielder, but ends up handling it and City have a free kick which Kolarov can whip in...
21'
Debuchy receives the ball in space on the right-hand side and charges for the by-line before driving a cross in. Gouffran meets it but has to stretch back to reach it and can only produce a tame header which goes off target.
20'
Boyata plays a ball forward for Negredo, but Tiote does well to muscle the striker off the ball and win possession for the hosts. Newcastle are doing well in the middle so far.
18'
There's a break in play, here, as Gouffran receives some attention after a poor attempt at a challenge on Negredo. The midfielder trudges off the pitch for more treatment.
17'
Navas exchanges passes with Negredo before dashing inside and squaring to Rodwell, who tries to work it on to his left and fashion a shot but he is dispossessed. Milner gets to the second ball but his shot is blocked and Newcastle clear.
16'
The visitors are taking this very calmly; almost like a training game. It's a surprising lack of intensity from players who you would think want to make an impression tonight.
15'
Rodwell drops deep to collect the ball from Lescott before squaring it to Boyata. The centre-backs have seen plenty of the ball so far tonight. Meanwhile, Milner is felled in midfield and City win a free kick.
14'
Cisse has a half-chance on the edge of the box as Ameobi heads Haidara's long ball down. Newcastle's number nine tries a shot on the turn from 18 yards but it's blocked by Boyata.
13'
Navas is put under severe pressure by Gouffran out on the flank, but the winger does well to lift a ball over the top. Yanga-Mbiwa comes across to cover the pass and plays it out for a throw.
12'
It's been a pretty tepid start so far, then. Newcastle are getting more possession at the moment but neither goalkeeper has been troubled yet.
11'
Haidara blasts the 35-yard free kick towards goal but it's blocked in the wall by Negredo in his first contribution of the match! Solid work from the striker.
10'
Álvaro Negredo enters the game and replaces S. Jovetić.
Newcastle win a free kick deep in the City half and Alvaro Negredo comes on for Jovetic. A disappointing night for the midfielder, then.
9'
Gouffran swings a cross in from the left and Cisse tries an acrobatic effort from the edge of the box but doesn't connect. Meanwhile, there's activity on the City bench; an injury already?
8'
JUST WIDE! Anita delivers the ball to the far post and Williamson heads it back across goal, but Dzeko manages to head clear for the visitors. Seconds later Ameobi flicks on a long ball and Cisse stretches out a long leg to divert the ball over Pantilimon, but just wide of the far post.
7'
Krul hammers the ball forward and Ameobi loses out to Boyata in the air, but he keeps pressing and eventually looks like breaking down the left-hand side before the City defender trips him and gives Newcastle a free kick...
6'
Jovetic is looking dangerous early on and almost gets clear after good play by Dzeko, but Williamson takes him out and City have a free kick in midfield.
5'
City are pressing high early on but Yanga-Mbiwa does well to find Gouffran down the left-hand side. The Newcastle attack fizzles out, though, and City have possession in their own half.
4'
Just offside! Richards breaks forward well and squares to Rodwell, who slides an excellent reverse pass through for Jovetic, who is through on goal but sees the flag go up.
3'
Dzeko looks for Navas out wide but Haidara reads the pass and intercepts, before Gouffran wins a throw on the far side. It comes back out to the right and Cisse chases a long diagonal ball, but it skips off the surface and goes behind.
2'
Yanga-Mbiwa's long ball forward goes straight through to Pantilimon, who will be grateful for the early touch. City keep the ball in their own half as they try to slowly feel their way into the match.
1'
And we're underway on Tyneside as Newcastle kick the game off.
Hello and welcome to LIVE coverage from Tyneside as Newcastle host Manchester City in another night of Capital One Cup fourth round action. Both sides suffered 2-1 defeats in the Premier League on Sunday, so who can shrug that off and book a place in the last eight?
The teams have been announced so let's bring you the line-ups, starting with Alan Pardew's men...
So, plenty of shuffling around as expected, with Newcastle making five changes from the weekend as Shola Ameobi makes a rare start for the Magpies. Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Massadio Haidara, Vurnon Anita and Papiss Cisse also make the XI for the hosts tonight.
The big Man City news is that Costel Pantilimon is given the nod in goal. He was likely to play anyway, but Joe Hart's error against Chelsea certainly cemented his place in tonight's side. Stefan Jovetic is also in as Manuel Pellegrini makes 10 changes from the defeat at Stamford Bridge.
Despite those 10 changes for City, it's still a side that boasts the talents of Stefan Jovetic, Jesus Navas and Edin Dzeko. These guys will be keen to make an impression to push for a regular spot. The hosts could be in for a tough night...
The odds aren't in Newcastle's favour, either. City have won the last eight meetings and haven't lost to the Magpies since September 2005. Pardew will be desperate to lift some of the pressure off his own back though, especially after that devastating derby defeat at the weekend.
There is one notable absentee, though, that could spur Newcastle on. Vincent Kompany is a rock at the back, but City have struggled time and time again when he's not there. It will almost certainly be something Pardew has reminded his players of tonight.
These two have already met this season, when Pellegrini's side demolished the Magpies 4-0 on the opening weekend. Plenty has happened since then, though, and who knows? There's always room for another upset!
Newcastle have allowed the cameras behind the scenes at St James' Park this evening. Trying to improve their reputation with the media, perhaps? Either way, seeing Papiss Cisse in his underwear is guaranteed to brighten up any Wednesday night....
The players are out and we're just moments away from the start. There are plenty of supporters in tonight so here's hoping for a good atmosphere, and a good game to match!
And that is indeed HALF TIME at St James' Park and it's 0-0 after a reasonably low-key affair. Newcastle have been the better side, registering 10 shots and even having the ball in the net after Ameobi's disallowed goal, but they couldn't make the pressure tell.
In tonight's only other Capital One Cup tie, Gylfi Sigurdsson has produced a superb goal to put Tottenham 1-0 up at home to Hull in a repeat of Sunday's Premier League encounter.
City haven't got going at all tonight. Pellegrini will undoubtedly have some choice words for his side, who need more of a spark going forward, and look slightly shaky at the back.
Pardew will be pretty happy, although will be disappointed they couldn't get in front. Ameobi has been lively and has caused Boyata plenty of problems, but Cisse hasn't matched his strike partner for quality.
Interestingly, the visitors have had 58 per cent possession so far tonight. That stat will become more pertinent if Newcastle keep failing to score and eventually tire.
So, almost time for the second half. Will we see a winner or could we be looking at extra time, or even penalties?
It's FULL TIME at St James' Park and Man City have run out 2-0 winners at Newcastle thanks to two extra-time goals from Negredo and Dzeko. They did it the hard way but Pellegrini's men reach the last eight and maintain their excellent record against the Magpies.
That also means Alan Pardew has still not reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup, and they face Chelsea on Saturday having crashed out of the cup and lost the Tyne-Wear derby within a few days.
Well, that's all from our LIVE coverage of the Capital One Cup this evening. Many thanks for joining us, and normality resumes at the weekend as the Premier League returns! For now, though, it's good night!
