FULL TIME OF EXTRA TIME!! And here they come, the dreaded penners; the anguish, the drama, the hearbreak, the elation. All to come in a couple of minutes.
Fantastic effort from Tottenham to keep the hosts at bay here. It's safe to see that they've all put in a valiant shift since the Vertonghen's sending off, with Dawson leading by example. 10/10 performance from him.
120'
Possibly the last chance here for Basel, but Steinhofer is deemed to have brought down Kyle Walker in the Spurs box. Such a tense finish to the period. 45 seconds left and Friedel lumps one long.
Last chance!
119'
But Frei's effort is headed away from danger. Carroll intercepts Dragovic's ball forward and plays it through to Adebayor, who loses the ball after a bustling run forward.
118'
The hots have a corner.
117'
Basel trying desperately to force the break through, but Park doesn't have the legs to latch onto a long ball forward. Goal kick Spurs.
116'
Spurs finally able to catch their breath as Assou-Ekotto wins a throw in deep in the Basel half.
115'
And its Dawson again with the block to deny Steinhofer. What a shift he has put in.
114'
Basel come inches for the second time in as many minutes. Diaz takes advantage of a slip from Kyle Walker to put the ball into the danger zone, but wee little Tom Carroll puts Strellar off enough for Freidel to frantically grab at the loose ball.
113'
Top drawer piece of defending from Michael Dawson. Steinhofer Frei is played in and unleashes a goalbound strike. With Friedel all but beaten, Michael Dawson throws himself across goal to deflect the shot away from danger. Incredible stuff from the big man. Sensational.
112'
The experienced Alex Frei comes on to make his 60th European appearance. Fans are absolutely loving it.
111'
A. Frei enters the game and replaces Mohamed Salah.
Dempsey charges towards the corner and replicates Adebayor almost exactly as he chips the ball out for a goal kick.
110'
Superb tackle from Tom Carroll to deny Salah a shooting opportunity just outside the Spurs box.
109'
Adebayor attempts to win a throw in deep in the Basel half but hits it straight out of play himself in an attempt to get a lucky ricochet off a Swiss defender.
108'
Steinhofer's looping ball almost reaches Salah at the back post but bounces too early for the Egyptian as it goes out for a goal kick.
107'
The hosts switch wings as Salah and Degen swap roles. Whilst looking really threatening throughout the tie, Salah didn't have much joy against Walker and he'll look to try his luck against the out of sorts Assou-Ekotto.
106'
Spurs kick us off for the second period of extra time.
105'
HALF TIME IN EXTRA TIME!! After the Vertonghen sending off, the narrative was already written. It's been Tottenham on the back foot since the start of the first period of extra time, but they've done superbly well to negate Basel's attacking prowess.
104'
Diaz sells Carroll with a beautiful dummy shot before unleashing a curling effort towards the far corner. The effort beats the outstretched Friedel but bounces about a foot wide of the upright. Excellent effort.
103'
Mohamed Elneny gets yellow.
El-Nenny sees yellow for tripping Sigurdsson as the Iceland international broke away. Huddlestone's ball meets the head of Dawson, but his header lacks power and is gathered easily by Sommer.
102'
Good work from Holtby as he dispossesses Steinhofer as he bore down on the Tottenham box.
101'
Tottenham looking well organised in defense, forcing Basel pass back to the defense.
100'
A good tackle from Tom Carroll denies Basel an opportunity in a very promising position, with Salah preparing to unleash a shot from 20 yards out.
99'
Spoke too soon, obviously, as Adebayor wins a corner. Sigurdsson's delivery can only find the head of Dragovic however, who heads well clear of danger.
98'
The play reminiscent of the second half now as ten-man Tottenham employ the two banks of four approach with Basel camped in their half.
97'
Incredible strike from El-Nenny as the midfielder's fearsome long-range strike crashes off the upright. Friedel completely beat as Tottenham are let off the hook by the woodwork.
96'
Strellar lobs a ball in behind the Spurs backline, but Steinhofer's high boot catches Dawson in the head to give away the free kick.
95'
Park scuffs a shot to the left corner of the Spurs box straight at Friedel under pressure from Dempsey. Top effort from the American there.
94'
Dempsey winded by Park as the South Korean crashes into the American as he challenged for the ball.
93'
A rather cumbersome Tom Huddlestone is penalised after pulling Diaz back as he glided past the big man.
92'
Basel looking comfortable in possession as probe Tottenham's defensive lines before Degen is caught offside.
91'
And we're underway here for the first period of extra time.
90' +4
M. Dawson gets yellow.
M. Streller gets yellow.
K. Walker gets yellow.
FULL TIME!! Dragovic let's his effort fly, but its disappointment for the home faithful as it sails over the bar. Extra time it is.
90' +3
Ructions here as players pile into a melee, led primarily by Strellar and Walker, who both see yellow.
90' +2
Spurs living dangerously as Basel throw all hands to the pump in the Tottenham half. Streinhoffer is scythed down by Assou-Ekotto and its a free kick to the hosts on the outskirts of the box.
90' +1
J. Vertonghen goes off after a red card!
Salah takes on Walker down the wing but the left back is equal to it. Basel throw in.
90'
Diaz unleashes an ambition effort from about 35 yards out and, as probably expected, it fails to trouble Friedel.
89'
RED CARD!! Vergonthen, who has played every single minute of this campaign, is sent off to an early bath after catching Strellar as the forward latched onto a through ball. He was the last man, no doubt about that, and knew his fate straight away.
88'
A great piece of defending from Michael Dawson denies Strellar a clear sight of goal as he heads it clear of danger.
87'
Nervy ending for Basel here as its Tottenham, for the first time this affair find themselves on top.
86'
Huddlestone plays Walker in down the right flank and his cross flashes dangerously across the goalmouth. But Dempsey is about a metre away from the loose ball and is unable to claim his hat-trick.
84'
Huddlestone is dispossessed by Strellar outside the Tottenham box, who shifts it wide to Degen on the right flank, who crosses it back into danger. Strellar manages to get a head to it, but is too far out to trouble Friedel, who catches the ball cleanly on the dive.
83'
Absolute parity restored here, and as things stand, we'll be heading into extra time after all 90 minutes are up!
82'
C. Dempsey has scored a goal for Tottenham Hotspur! Assist by T. Huddlestone.
GOAL!! And there it is! Clint Dempsey with his second of the night. A sumptuous crossfield ball from Huddlestone is chested down by the American at the back post, before he pokes one towards goal. Sommer does terribly and can only help it into his own net.
81'
Basel's entire eleven are now camped in their own half as Spurs try desperately to force the breakthrough.
80'
Sigurdsson snatches at a shot from outside the box and looks visibly disappointed with himself as he watches his effort fly harmlessly over the bar.
79'
B. Assou-Ekotto enters the game and replaces K. Naughton.
Superb crossfield ball from Tom Carroll finds Adebayor, but his heavy touch knocks the ball away from danger.
78'
Spurs seem to have lost a bit of their impetus here and seem to be tiring. Huddlestone comes on for Parker to provide the anchor in midfield.
77'
T. Huddlestone enters the game and replaces S. Parker.
Assou-Ekotto comes on for Kyle Naughton, who hasn't had the best of evenings.
76'
A very loose pass from Holtby provides Diaz with a clear shot of goal on the fringes of the Tottenham box. His shot is hit straight at Friedel though, which let's the former Schalke man right off the hook. Poor error from Holtby.
75'
Schar launches into a fantastic 50-yard run through the gut of the Spurs midfield, but is dispossessed impressively by Vertonghen. Ball back now with Spurs in the Basel half.
74'
Adebayor shifts it wide for Kyle Walker, but the former Sheffield United man puts in a really weak effort that fails to clear the first man.
73'
An outswinging corner from Sigurdsson finds the head of the towering head of Dawson, who sends Sommer flying across goal as he makes the save. Good opportunity there. Beginning to pick up for Spurs here.
72'
Parker lets a long range strike fly, but it's blocked well.
71'
The tactical contours of the game seems to have shifted now, with Basel allowing Tottenham as much of the ball as they want, whilst looking to hit them on the break.
70'
M. Steinhöfer enters the game and replaces V. Stocker.
Basel employing two banks of four without the ball, which seems to be working a treat for the hosts as a loose Spurs pass finds the feet of El-Nenny.
69'
El Nenney wins the ball well and plays in Marco Strellar, but a sterling sliding challenge from Vertonghen negates the danger. Classy stuff from a classy man.
68'
Vertonghen winds Parker after crashing into the back of the midfielder as he leaped to head away a long Basel ball.
67'
Tottenham set up camp in the Basel half, but really seem to be lacking incisiveness going forward. Not looking likely to penetrate the Basel defense anytime soon.
66'
Vertonghen does well to win a throw in deep in the Basel half.
65'
A long-range effort from El Nenny stings the gloves of Brad Friedel, who parries it as far as Michael Dawson, who duly clears.
64'
Strellar finds Stocker deep in the Tottenham half, but Walker does superbly to win the ball back with a strong challenge.
63'
A clever ball from Diaz finds Salah outside the Tottenham box. The Egyptian plays it through to Degen, but the wingers shot hits the side netting.
61'
Carroll does extremely well to win the ball from El Nenney on the fringes of the Basel box, but Dempsey's poor ball is cleared up by Dragovic. Weak effort.
60'
Sigurdsson is penalised as he stretches to win the ball from El Nenney deep in the Basel half. Game seems to have lost some of its energy, which has to change if Spurs are to get back on level terms.
59'
M. Díaz enters the game and replaces S. Dié.
T. Carroll enters the game and replaces M. Dembélé.
Sigurdsson flagged for offside after receiving a poor ball from Adebayor at the byeline.
58'
S. Dié gets yellow.
Serey Die, who has been really poor so far, picks up a yellow after a poor challenge on Holtby. He's almost immediately taken off for Marcelo Diaz.
Dembele, also on a yellow, comes off for Tom Carroll.
57'
Dragovic is clumsily taken down by Dawson about 40 yards from the Spurs goal. Fabian Frei whips in a pinpoint cross, which whistles inches wide of the goalmouth after Dragovic is somehow allowed a completely free header by the Spurs defense. Terrible marking there.
56'
His delivery is poor, though allowing Sommer to palm it clear of danger. But Kyle Naughton controls the loose ball before unleashing a powerful goalward drive, which is blocked in the area.
55'
Tottenham remain on the front foot, with Sigurdsson winning a corner off Degen.
54'
Adebayor comes close after bounding onto Holtby's through ball. Took a touch too many there and his effort crashes into the side netting.
53'
Basel are straight on the counter-attack, but Serey Die's effort is blocked by Vertonghen. Tottenham out of trouble for now.
52'
C. Dempsey gets yellow.
Sigurdsson's effort is poor and sails impotently over the bar.
51'
He sees yellow, however, after some pretty vehement remonstrating with the referee.
50'
Spurs back on the attack now, with Dempsey winning a free-kick roughly 30 yards out.
49'
A. Dragović has scored a goal for Basel!
Basel come close at the other end after Salah's threaded through ball is met by the both Strellar and Dawson. Basel corner.
GOAL!! Basel have their lead back after Dragovic atones for his earlier effort with a poked effort. Culpability lies squarely with Friedel, whose poor attempt to parry it wide knocked it straight at the feet of the lurking defender.
48'
A good opportunity for Adebayor from a Spurs corner, but his header lacks power and it's an easy save for Sommer.
47'
Holtby is almost instantly caught out, allowing the pacey Basel attack to launch an early attack at the Tottenham goal, but Serey Die's final ball saves Tottenham's blushes. Truly awful effort from him, not for the first time either.
46'
Back to it then as Spurs kick us off for the second half.
45' +2
HALF-TIME! Fabian Frei's effort glances off the wall and goes out for a corner, but Stocker's effort is cleared comfortable.
45' +1
The tricky Valentin Stocker is clattered by Dembele about 7 yards outside of the Tottenham box after a beautiful run. The Belgian sees yellow.
45'
M. Dembélé gets yellow.
At the other end, Naughton jinks in from the left wing and lets one fly at Sommer, but it's straight at the keeper and collected comfortably.
44'
Strellar finds himself at the byeline in the Tottenham area, but his cut back rolls helplessly through the box with no Basel player in sight.
43'
Degen, who missed the majority of last week's game, goes down hard after a challenge from Holtby. Seems to have jarred his knee and gingerly gets back to his feet.
42'
Basel really finding their flow now as they set up camp in the Tottenham half, but Spurs' sheer discipline seems to be working.
41'
Basel waste a promising position as Salah dodges a Walker tackle to find himself in acres of space at the byeline. His only option is backwards however and the ball ends up at the feet of a white shirt.
39'
K. Naughton gets yellow.
The referee reaches into his pocket now as Kyle Naughton sees yellow for impeding Salah.
A superb inswinger from Stocker fails to find the leaping Strellar, though, and instead finds the grateful arms of Brad Friedel.
37'
Walker is well tackled by Park as he bounds down the right wing, and manages to knee the South Korean in the back of the skull as he runs away. Looks cynical to me, but the ref waves away the complaints from Basel.
35'
Fantastic save from Sommer to deny Dembele's curling effort after the Belgian was played it neatly by Clint Dempsey. The ball bounces just inches away from the swinging left boot of Sigurdsson, before Adebayor drives his effort straight at the keeper.
34'
A good piece of defending from Walker deep in the Spurs half to prevent the enormous Marco Strellar claim the ball in a dangerous area on the left flank. Throw in Spurs.
32'
The smoke from the flares seems to have settled now, as has the game. Spurs have a free-kick from deep but give away the ball to Serey Die, whose ball is atrocious and rolls out for a throw in.
29'
A crucial interception from Michael Dawson denies Basel with a dangerous low cross to the onrunning Stocker. Supremely read.
28'
And Salah's in again, but takes a touch too many to allow Kyle Walker to clear the ball from danger. The Swiss giants are now fully in flow and the noise from the fans have reached fever pitch.
27'
Mohamed Salah has scored a goal for Basel! Assist by M. Streller.
GOAL!! The fleet-footed Salah latches on to Strellar's pass and, despite a heavy touch, manages to poke it past Freidel into the bottom corner.
25'
The goal has seemingly only helped to awaken the Basel faithful, who are now in full voice.
24'
Dempsey checking on his ankle after seemingly going down injured. He's back up now, though, but looking a bit fragile.
23'
C. Dempsey has scored a goal for Tottenham Hotspur!
GOAL!! An absolute howler from highly-rated youngster Dragovic allows Dempsey to pounce on the loose ball and round the keeper before slotting it home. That really is a poor bit of play from the centre-back, whose attempted sliding block of Vertonghen's through-ball only served to help it on to the US international.
21'
A flick-on from Strellar finds Philipp Degen, but Naughton recovers well to win the ball back.
20'
Parker intercepts well in the Basel half and spreads it over to Naughton on the left flank, but Spurs just can't make use of the position and the ball goes out for a Basel throw in.
19'
The ball's back with Spurs now, though, and it's a throw-in for the visitors inside their own half.
18'
Adebayor bundles over Dragovic in the Basel half. Free kick to the Swiss champions.
17'
The hosts just can't seem to get a foothold in the game, often finding themselves passing the ball backwards or losing the ball. Degen is flagged for offside after a crafty chip from Stocker.
16'
Spurs looking very neat on the ball tonight but do seem to be lacking that cutting edge with Bale on the sidelines. But it hardly matters given Basel's tepid start to the clash.
15'
Basel lose possession yet again, but Sigurdsson's long-range effort sails tamely over the bar.
14'
Schar darts up the gut of the Tottenham midfield before miscontrolling the ball and receiving a fair whack from Dawson as the two crash together.
13'
Holtby dinks a classy ball over the Basel centrebacks to find Adebayor, but the Togolese forward is just offside. Bright play from the visitors here.
11'
But after being dispossessed in the middle of the park, Spurs find themselves on the backfoot as Degen's looping cross is volleyed well over the bar by Salah.
10'
Another good spell of possession for Villas-Boas's men, until another misplaced pass from Naughton finds touch. Tottenham almost immediately reclaim the ball and play it all the way back to Dawson.
9'
Serey Die with another hopeless long ball to hand possession back to Spurs. Dempsey scuffs a shot impotently wide of the post from range.
8'
He tees it up for Vertonghen, whose long-range effort crashes into the shins of the wall. Poor stuff.
7'
Walker is brought down by Dragovic about 30 yards out. Sigurdsson to take.
6'
Spurs looking healthy here and seem to be controlling the tempo of the game well.
5'
Adebayor attempts to round Park down the left flank and wins Spurs a throw-in in a decent position. The ball finds it's way to Naughton on the left wing, who misplaces a pass for a Basel goal kick.
4'
Game winding down to a nice simmer now as Basel pass the ball between the back-four, before Serey Die lumps up a more than ambitious ball that finds absolutely nobody.
3'
Schar's low long-range drive whistles past the upright, as the outstretched Friedel throws himself across goal. He was well beaten, as well.
2'
But the free kick comes to nothing as the ball is calmly cleared away by Dragovic. Basel, as they did at White Hart Lane, break with real vigour, and win a free-kick 30 yards out.
1'
Tottenham claim possession off the kick-off until Sigurdsson is scythed down on the left flank.
Evening all, I'm Alex Ward and I'll be guiding you through tonight's Europa League action as reigning Swiss champions Basel host Tottenham in the second leg of their quarter final tie.
It's been almost 30 years since Tottenham progressed to a European semi final and securing berth tonight is undoubtedly going to prove a tall order.
BASEL TEAM: Sommer; P Degen, Schar, Dragovic, Park; F Frei, El-Nenny; Salah, Serey Die, Stocker; Streller
Subs: Vailatti, Sauro, Steinhofer, D. Degen, Diaz, Cabral, A Frei
A number of key personnel changes for the visitors as the injured trio of Lennon, Bale and Gallas make way for Dempsey, Dawson and Sigurdsson as Spurs are forced to cope with an injury-blighted squad list.
Kyle Naughton is preferred to Benoit Assou-Ekotto, whilst academy lad Shaq Coulthirst (me neither) makes it onto the bench.
The fearsome trio of Valentin Stocker, Marco Strellar and Mohamad Salah all start for Basel after proving more than a handful for the Spurs rearguard at White Hart Lane this time last week.
Last Thursday was a chastening evening for Andre Villas-Boas to say the least as Tottenham came back from a two goals down to keep themselves in the tie.
The key to tonight will be suppressing the dynamism of Basel's aforementioned attacking trio, with Michael Dawson charged with the responsibility of dealing with the aerial threat of the towering Strellar, who provides a vital focal point to Basel's attacking corps.
The players are making their way onto the pitch as I type. Absolutely awful conditions at St. Jakob Park, where it's been virtually chucking it down all day.
A couple of lads with their tops off though, always nice to see.
We're underway here in Switzerland.
Basel still have the edge in this tie and are set to progress as things stand, but it's been a more than promising half for the visitors, who have had the lion's share of possession.
But in terms of chances, both teams could have netted at least once more in the first half.
After a remarkably comfortable start to the game for Spurs, Basel's ability to rally after going a goal down has been astounding. They immediately rediscovered the play we saw last week at the Lane and have got right back into it. Salah, Strellar and Stocker have all looked dangerous as expected.
By all accounts, though, this clash looks highly unlikely to finish 1-1, and you'd expect there to be plenty more action in the second half.
Got to give credit to Michael Dawson, who looks far more capable at dealing with the imposing Marco Strellar than Gallas's terrible showing last week. But having said that, Spurs still can't find a solution to the pace of Mohamad Salah and Valentin Stocker, with Parker and Naughton coming up short a number of times in the first period.
Schar steps up.
SCHAR SCORES - 1-0 Basel
HUDDLESTONE SAVED BY SOMMER - Basel 1-0
STRELLAR SCORES - Basel 2-0
Schar scores - Basel 1-0
Huddlestone misses - Basel 1-0
Sigurdsson scores - Basel 2-1
Frei scores - Basel 3-1
Adebayor misses - Basel 3-1
Diaz scores - Basel win 4-1
So Tottenham's campaign hits the buffers. It's over for Spurs and they look absolutely cresfallen. To come away empty handed after working so hard to get to the shootout is heartbreaking. Got to hand it to Basel though, who are more than worthy winners after outplaying Tottenham in both legs of the tie.
Even as a neutral, I'm absolutely gutted for them, but I have to be grateful for the drama this tie has provided. Stunning stuff.
Looking ahead, though, as we must, Basel will join Fernerbahce, Benfica and Chelsea in the semi-finals. The draw should be on tomorrow morning, at 10am in the UK, I believe (do check this), so at least we have one British team to look forward to in the semis.
Have to say, it's been an absolute pleasure to join you all for these two games and hopefully see you all again for some more live commentary action. Good night and God bless.
