Ancelotti lauds Pastore impact

24 January 2013 12:03

Carlo Ancelotti heaped praise on Javier Pastore in the wake of Paris Saint-Germain's 3-1 Coupe de France win over Toulouse on Wednesday.

Pastore put in a man-of-the-match performance to help PSG through to the next round of the competition, and his coach feels the Argentine midfielder can make the difference thanks to his individual class.

"Pastore has a lot of quality. He is the type of player who doesn't always put in great performances and can be a bit inconsistent over time. We have to accept him like that, though, as he can make the difference with his abilities," Ancelotti told France Football.

"We put in a good performance. We played with intensity right from the start. Toulouse were no pushovers, but the players did a great job.

"Cup games are always dangerous, so I'm very pleased with this result."

PSG resume match action on Sunday when they host Lille in Ligue 1.

League is our priority, says Matuidi

24 January 2013 10:48

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi says his side's main focus should be winning the league.

The Paris club stayed alive in the Coupe de France with a 3-1 victory over Toulouse on Wednesday, but still have a battle on their hands to claim the Ligue 1 title and remain in the last 16 of the Champions League.

While Matuidi would love to win all three competitions, he said the league should remain the club's priority.

"Of course, this Cup is important but for us the most important is the championship and the Champions League too," he said.

"It's nice to play in three different competitions. I'd like to win the Coupe de France, but the league remains our priority."

PSG were made to work hard for their victory in the Coupe de France, needing two second half goals to see off a resilient Toulouse side and move through to the last 16 of the competition.

"We did the right things, and Toulouse were unable to close the game at 1-1," Matuidi said.

"We used to have teams that closed the game against us when they were level but they didn't so we could play our football.

"When Toulouse equalised we were not scared because we knew we could score a couple more goals even if we didn't manage it in the first half.

"We kept a good state of mind and that's what helped us to win tonight."

Ancelotti confident in PSG depth

22 January 2013 21:01

Carlo Ancelotti believes Kevin Gameiro can cover the loss of Zlatan Ibrahimovic for PSG's Coupe de France tie with Toulouse.

The Swedish striker is out after picking up his third booking in 10 matches but the PSG manager believes Gameiro can successfully deputise despite starting only three Ligue 1 games this season.

"We have the players to replace Zlatan. Ibrahimovic is very important for us but we also have strikers like (Kevin) Gameiro who hasn't played a lot," Ancelotti said.

"Gameiro can play well and replace him. He scored six (five) goals in the league. We are not worried because Ibra is out.

"I think the team will still be competitive. The Coupe de France is important for us. We want to do our best."

PSG will be looking to improve on last season's disappointing showing in the Coupe de France, when they were knocked out by Lyon in the quarter-finals.

PSG have won their past six league meetings while Ibrahimovic has scored a league-best 19 goals.
