Toluca vs. Tijuana  0 - 2

Liga MX: Tijuana 2 Toluca 1

Tijuana claimed their first Liga MX title, just five years after being founded, with a 4-1 aggregate win over Toluca in the Apertura final.

Goals from Richard Ruiz and Duvier Riascos in the space of two minutes sealed a 2-0 victory in the second leg for Tijuana, who led 2-1 from the opening match of the tie.

Toluca, who have dominated the Mexican top flight with seven titles since 1998, were favoured to equal Guadalajara Chivas' record of 11 league titles.

But they were unable to defy the visiting Tijuana, who claimed the crown just 18 months after their promotion to the first division.

Tijuana could have been reduced to 10 men just 25 minutes in when Javier Gandolfi flew into a tough challenge with Toluca's Wilson Mathias, but the referee failed to show even a yellow card.

Despite Toluca trailing, it was Tijuana who looked the most likely to find the net as American Edgar Castillo fired a rasping shot that was well saved by goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera.

Tijuana did break the deadlock with 20 minutes remaining through substitute Ruiz, who followed up a Fernando Acre free kick that cannoned back off the post.

Moments after the restart the visitors doubled their advantage on the night and stretched their aggregate lead to three goals when Riascos finished off a fine counterattack by fooling the goalkeeper and putting the ball into the empty net.

Toluca had no answer as the game drew to an end, cueing scenes of joy for players and travelling supporters.

Tijuana have been crowned Mexican champions after defeating heavyweights Toluca in the Liga MX final just a year after promotion.

Few gave Tijuana a chance against the 10-time champions but Antonio Mohamed's side thoroughly deserved their 4-1 aggregate win over two legs, with a brave 2-0 away victory at a partisan Estadio Nemesio Diez in Toluca sealing the club's first ever title.

Richard Ruiz and Duvier Riascos scored for Tijuana within a minute in the second half to turn the game on its head.

The visitors were grateful to make it to the break with the match goalless, a result that would have been enough for Tijuana to claim the title.

But Ruiz struck to send the travelling contingent into ecstasy on 70 minutes and the home side barely had a chance to reset before Riascos latched onto a through ball and rounded Alfredo Talavera to slide the ball into an empty net.

Just a season after winning the Mexican Apertura title, Tijuana's story is quite astounding given the club was only formed in 2007 after a long line of defunct teams in the US-border city.

Tijuana won the first leg 2-1 at the Estadio Caliente and denied Toluca the chance to equal Guadalajara Chivas' record 11 titles.
