MLS wrap: Galaxy, Dynamo progress

8 November 2012 08:00

The Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo have advanced to the MLS Western Conference and Eastern Conference finals respectively.

LA headed into the second leg of their Western Conference semi-final against the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday on the back foot having lost the first leg 1-0.

But, thanks to a Robbie Keane brace, the Galaxy turned the tables at San Jose's Buck Shaw Stadium with a comprehensive 3-1 victory to win 3-2 on aggregate.

They will now battle either Real Salt Lake or the Seattle Sounders for a spot in the MLS Cup 2012.

Keane kicked things off for LA in the 21st minute when he got on the end of a Mike Magee assist and struck the ball into the bottom left corner from outside the penalty box.

The Irishman then doubled his goal tally 13 minutes later and put his side's nose in front on aggregate when he latched onto a Landon Donovan through ball to finish from a difficult angle.

Donovan was the provider again six minutes before half-time when he helped Magee get his name on the scoresheet to make it 3-0 and ensure the Earthquakes were up against it to save their season.

Alan Gordon pulled one back for San Jose eight minutes from time to set up a frantic finish but the Galaxy held on.

Meanwhile, despite losing their second leg 1-0 to Sporting Kansas City, Houston booked their spot in the MLS Eastern Conference final courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Sporting could only muster a Seth Sinovic header in the 64th minute as their campaign came to an end.

Houston will now meet either DC United or the New York Red Bulls in their conference decider with the duo to clash on Thursday after their second leg was postponed due to a blizzard.
