Ibrahimovic embraces playmaker duties

7 November 2012 15:40

Paris Saint-Germain forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he is happy to be the provider if he cannot get on the scoresheet himself.

The Swedish star provided four assists in Tuesday's 4-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

"I try to help my team always, my colleagues, if I cannot score I try to help them score," he said.

"Luckily they were scoring and that is why it became four assists. It's important that we win the game.

"I feel good, we won the game, after the first half which was so-so, the second half was much better."

Ibrahimovic said he was not to blame for a collision with Dinamo goalkeeper Ivan Kelara at the Parc des Princes.

"All I can say is it was not my purpose to hit the goalkeeper," he added.

"I came in at very high speed and I was watching the ball, and then when I saw the goalkeeper it was too late.

"Sometimes these things can happen, let's hope they understand football."

PSG, second in Group A and five points clear of Dynamo Kiev, are poised to qualify for the knockout phase of the competition with two games remaining.

Ancelotti: PSG back on track

7 November 2012 01:48

Paris Saint-Germain's 4-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb proved their Ligue 1 loss to St-Etienne was a one-off, according to Carlo Ancelotti.

Ligue 1 side PSG dispatched Dinamo with ease in the Champions League match at the Parc de Princes on Tuesday, with star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic providing the assist for all four goals.

Ancelotti was buoyed by his side's response after their shock league defeat against Saint-Etienne on Saturday, the coach insisting that result was a rare slip.

"It was a very good game. The reaction tonight showed that the match against Saint-Etienne was an accident," he said.

Alex opened the scoring after 16 minutes, before Blaise Matuidi, Jeremy Menez and substitute Guillaume Hoarau all found the net to keep up the pressure on Porto at the top of the group.

Goal-scorer Matuidi praised his team-mates for the improvement they showed in the second half following a slow start.

"In the first half, we did not do the right things even if we started well. We entered the game wrong," the midfielder told the UEFA website.

"At half-time the coach had put things in place, and we went ahead with intensity. Tonight, we saw a beautiful Paris (team) in the second half. We're now in a position to go through. That was the aim."

PSG sit second in Group A , a point behind leaders Porto. Next up they face domestic champions Montpellier in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

Ancelotti expecting PSG response

6 November 2012 07:40

Carlo Ancelotti wants Paris Saint-Germain to add style to go with their substance, starting with a win over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night.

The French side beat their Croatian opponents 2-0 on away in their last Champions League clash and face them again this week with the hope of taking a significant step towards qualification for the knockout stage.

The cash-rich club have had an excellent start on all fronts this season but Ancelotti is well aware that the quality of their play has left a little to be desired at times.

"We haven't played outstanding football so far this season, but we have played very well at times," he told reporters.

"We reached some kind of balance, and that's where the results come from. What's important now is to display more continuity.

"We have won nine out of our 12 fixtures so the results are here, even if the quality of our football isn't incredible."

Dinamo Zagreb have had a tough time in the Champions League this season and are yet to secure a single point in their first three group stage matches, but Ancelotti defended their inclusion.

"Dinamo deserve to be playing this competition," the ex-Chelsea boss insisted.

"Dinamo came through the qualifying rounds, so they deserve respect, and if they haven't scored yet, we can only hope this will continue against us.

"PSG's goal is to qualify for the next round. We could still win the group – we'll see how things stand after this game."
