Girard upset with defence

7 October 2012 06:30

Montpellier coach Rene Girard was disappointed with his side after their poor Ligue 1 season continued on Saturday.

Girard's side have made a terrible start to their title defence, winning just two of their first eight league fixtures.

That leaves them 10 points behind table-toppers Marseille, with their latest slip-up coming in a 3-2 home loss to Evian TG.

Evian had won just once prior to the fixture and sat in the relegation zone, but a hat-trick from Tunisian attacker Saber Khelifa fired them to victory.

"This is football. When we do not do what we have to do we will lose," Girard said.

"We will also lose when we do not have much luck. It is quite tough to take three goals like that at home. Our defending was quite upsetting.

"When we are not serious or focused we face the consequences. I will not say the guys did not try hard, but we did not do well.

"We were leading, they came back and at the end they were leading. We suffered from a lack of discipline in defence."

Montpellier were not helped by their UEFA Champions League exertions mid-week, as their fresher opponents finished stronger with two second-half goals.

But Girard refused to make excuses despite the short turnaround.

"We expected to be fatigued," he said.

"We played three days ago and we spent a lot of energy in that game. We were expecting a complicated start. The guys need to focus and improve."
