CONCACAF Champions League wrap: Toronto, Monterrey cruise

26 September 2012 06:17

Toronto have kept themselves in the hunt for a spot in the Championship round of the CONCACAF Champions League after a 3-0 over Aguila.

Midfielder Terry Dunfield scored twice for Toronto on Tuesday as they moved within three points of Group One-leaders Santos Laguna.

But the Canadian club will need to knock off Santos Laguna in their final group match on October 24 to advance to the next stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Toronto took the lead in El Salvador when Ryan Johnson set up Quincy Amarikwa in the 16th minute.

Just five minutes before half-time, Johnson created Toronto's second goal with Dunfield taking advantage to score, while the 30-year-old Canadian struck again in the 86th minute to wrap up the victory.

Toronto now have six points in Group One, Santos Laguna are top with nine, while Aguila have finished the group stage winless.

In Mexico, Monterrey cruised past Municipal of Guatemala 3-0, while in Costa Rica, Herediano defeated Panama's Tauro 2-1.

Monterrey are top of Group Seven with three wins from as many games, while Herediano moved into the lead in Group Two with the same record.
