Point pleases Pelligrini

24 September 2012 07:29

Malaga head coach Manuel Pellegrini was pleased after his side drew 0-0 against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Sunday.

The club is currently suffering financial difficulties and is rumoured to be heavily in debt, but Pellegrini says his side remains focused on playing football and the goalless draw was an excellent result.

"It is always a good result to get something positive in San Mames, being a draw or a victory," he said.

"They are a team who normally create eight or nice chances per game and today they could not get near out goal.

"However we did not play well today, we had problems with keeping possession, we lost the ball too often, but we had the concentration to avoid the threat of Bilbao, so I think a 0-0 draw is quite fair.

"Today, both myself and the players were only concerned about the sporting aspect, not the financial.

"We are in permanent touch with the owners, so it is a topic which we will analyse in private inside the club.

"I was focused this afternoon on beating a good squad like Bilbao are.

"We got a point and I think that this is important."

The Chilean coach also revealed that an injury to Jeremy Toulalan is likely to sideline the midfielder for two to three weeks.

Bielsa looks to kick-start season

23 September 2012 02:25

Coach Marcelo Bielsa hopes to improve Athletic Bilbao's poor start to the La Liga season at Malaga on Sunday.

Bielsa's side have won only once in four matches and welcome Malaga to the Estadio San Mames following their home draw with Kiryat Shmona in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

Bielsa was quietly confident about getting a positive result against Manuel Pellegrini's side, but is wary of the threat posed by former Argentina striker Javier Saviola.

"We didn't expect the results we have had at all. We thought we would have had better results," he said.

"Tomorrow's (Sunday's) game is the perfect opportunity to atone for our poor results and get the points we should have got already.

"(Javier) Saviola is a great goal scorer. That's what he has done at all the clubs where he has played. To score is what he is capable of doing, it's what he knows to do well and what he normally does."
