26 July 2012 06:18

Vasco da Gama remain top of Brazil's Serie A after Alecsandro's late winner in a 1-0 win over Botafogo on Wednesday.

The Brazilian-born striker struck three minutes from time to ensure Vasco stay top, a point ahead of Atletico Mineiro, who play their game in hand on Thursday.

Third-placed Fluminense lost pace with the top two after a 1-0 defeat at fourth-placed Gremio.

Kleber scored the only goal for Gremio in the 69th minute to move them within a point of Fluminense.

Atletico GO held off a spirited fightback from Sao Paulo to win 4-3 at home.

Goals by Marino, Marcio (penalty) and Patric gave Atletico a 3-0 lead before Ademilson reduced the arrears.

But Wesley made it 4-1 a minute before half-time.

Jadson and Rafael Toloi scored for Sao Paulo in the second half to make for a nervous finale.

Two second-half goals from Leonardo helped Coritiba come from 2-1 down to win 4-3 away to Nautico for their first three points in six league games.

Chicao and a stoppage-time penalty from Paulinho steered to a 2-0 victory over Cruzeiro.

Ponte Preta drew 1-1 with Sporting Retife after taking an early lead through Andre Luis.

Dagoberto scored the only goal after 25 minutes as Internacional made it two wins in a row with a 1-0 victory at Figueirense.
