Sevilla derby ends all square

22 January 2012 03:10

Sevilla coach Marcelino feels a point was the best outcome for his side, following their 1-1 draw with Betis in La Liga on Saturday.

The red half of Seville were forced to come back from behind to earn a share of the spoils, as Alvaro Negredo's goal cancelled out Benat's strike earlier in the first half, and after taking Federico Fazio's sending off into account, the 46-year-old accepted the final result.

"It was a shame about (going down) in the first half, because we came here for the win. We're not happy with the result, but on balance it was the best outcome," Marcelino told EFE.

"The team is now in a different dynamic and a very good one. I am very proud and pleased with the players."

Meanwhile, Betis coach Pepe Mel echoed his opponent's sentiments after the game, saying he was satisfied satisfaction with the encouraging display against their arch-rivals.

"It was the just distribution of points - Sevilla were better in the first half, and Betis were in the second," Mel said.

"We've gone home happy because we played against a team with many internationals. It is a very valuable point," he said.

Sevilla climb to eighth in the La Liga table, while Betis move up to 12th.

La Liga wrap: Atletico thump Sociedad, Betis and Sevilla draw

22 January 2012 00:57

Radamel Falcao claimed a hat-trick as Atletico Madrid hammered Real Sociedad 4-0 in La Liga on Saturday, while Espanyol and Getafe also won.

The match between Sociedad and their visitors began frantically at Estadio Anoeta, with Atletico awarded a penalty just two minutes in.

Sociedad centre-back Vadim Demidov handled inside the area, and Falcao calmly dispatched the resulting spot-kick past goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

Adrian Lopez missed a good chance to double Atletico's lead mid-way through the first half, while Sociedad had a decent claim to a penalty turned down after Diego Godin appeared to handle Gorka Elustondo's free-kick.

There was a sense of deja vu for the home side as they were made to pay for a sloppy start to the second half.

It had taken the visitors 70 seconds to open the scoring earlier in the match.

This time they need just 64, with Adrian tapping home from close range to make it 2-0 right after the restart.

Atletico's right-back Juanfran was superb in the build-up to the second goal, neatly exchanging passes with Falcao on the edge of the penalty area before lofting a cross for Adrian to pounce on at the back post.

With eight minutes remaining, Falcao applied the gloss to Atletico's victory with an outrageous lob from outside the area.

He then added a confident finish from inside the six-yard box to complete an impressive rout.

In other matches, the points were shared in the Seville derby, as promoted club Real Betis were held 1-1 at home by Sevilla.

The hosts led through Benat's goal 26 minutes into the match at Estadio Benito Villamarin, with Alvaro Negredo levelling for Sevilla five minutes before half-time.

The visitors had Federico Fazio sent off for a second yellow card with 22 minutes still to play, but the 10 men held out to take a point from their local rivals.

Getafe came from behind to beat Racing Santander 2-1 away from home, thanks to goals in either half from Jaime Gavilan Martinez and Miku.

Santander had led through Christian Stuani's early effort.

Finally, Raul Baena, Verdu and Rui Fonte were all on target as Espanyol dispatched Granada 3-0 at home.
