Bundesliga preview: Relegation battle down to the wire

13 May 2011 10:01

Borussia Dortmund have already sealed the Bundesliga title, but they will have a big say in the relegation battle when the season ends on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's side wrapped up their first league title since 2002 last month, and will be looking to end the campaign on a high note at their home ground, Signal-Iduna-Park, against Eintracht Frankfurt.

If Dortmund take all three points, Christoph Daum's side will be contemplating life in Bundesliga 2 next term.

In fact, even a win for Eintracht may not be enough to save the strugglers - if Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach both win on Saturday they will face the drop regardless.

Felix Magath's Wolfsburg travel to Hoffenheim and Monchengladbach are at Hamburg, with both teams looking to avoid 16th place that would see them face a playoff with the third-placed team from the second-tier - a spot occupied by Bochum.

Wolfsburg are level on 35 points with Monchengladbach, but have superior goal difference, although Swiss coach Lucien Favre has seen his Monchengladbach team win three games in succession.

Second-placed Bayer Leverkusen need just a point from their trip to Freiburg to be sure of automatic Champions League qualification, while Bayern Munich need them to lose while winning their home clash with Stuttgart to take second.

Mainz have already secured a place in the Europa League, but could finish fourth if they can beat the already-relegated St Pauli at home - provided Hannover do not beat sixth-placed Nuremberg.

Schalke will try and warm up for their German Cup final clash with second-tier Duisburg when they travel to Cologne, and Kaiserslautern play host to Werder Bremen.
