Report

Jermain Defoe scored five second-half goals as Tottenham demolished Wigan 9-1 at White Hart Lane to return to top four in the table.

Wigan Athletic were handed their heaviest ever league defeat as Spurs produced the second fastest hat-trick and equalled the all-time record win in Premier League history.

Peter Crouch gave Spurs an early lead and two goals in four early second half minutes from Defoe confirmed the win, before Aaron Lennon added the fifth and Defoe claimed his fourth in the 69th minute and a fifth in 87 minutes, before David Bentley (via Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland) and Niko Kranjcar completed this remarkable rout.

Wigan had their worst shivers from the outset with Spurs threatening twice before taking a ninth minute lead.

Aaron Lennon tormented Edman and put a teasing ball into the box onto which Crouch ghosted past Titus Bramble to stoop and head the ball into the back of the net for 1-0.

Wigan struggled to get out of their own half for the first 20 minutes, in which Tom Huddlestone flashed a volley wide and Crouch and Palacios both had shots saved by Chris Kirkland in the Wigan goal.

The away side then started to come into the game and both Hugo Rodallega and Jason Scotland fired wide from distance before the former Swansea striker had a chance well saved by Heurelho Gomes.

Jermain Defoe then almost extended Spurs' lead when he hit the crossbar, while N'Zogbia replicated the act at the other end.

However, the game was effectively put out of Wigan's in 13 second half minutes.

First, Defoe got on the end of a Lennon cross to fire in on 50 minutes, before the England striker was put through by Palacios to fire it past Kirkland for 3-0 three minutes later.

There was then a moment of controversy on 56 minutes when Paul Scharner seemed to control a Rodallega pass with his hand before beating Gomes with a powerful shot, but Defoe then restored order two minutes later as he volleyed in yet another Lennon cross to seal his hat-trick.

Lennon added the fifth himself after Crouch smuggled the ball out to his team-mate from a congested penalty area, with the winger angling his finish into the far post.

Defoe, in full flow now and demanding the ball, grabbed his fourth 21 minutes from the end by latching on to Vedran Corluka's ball and firing home off the post.

His fifth and Tottenham's seventh came after a mistake by Edman, with Defoe finishing through Kirkland's legs. Bentley's free-kick accounted for the eighth goal, his effort going in off the bar

Seconds from the final whistle Spurs secured their biggest ever Premier League win when the Wigan defence put in no challenges as Bentley set-up Kranjcar who blasted the ball off the underside of the bar for an incredible 9-1 victory.
