Mariano Andujar was at full stretch to deny a Valdes snapshot, but the two teams seemed low on confidence and struggled to create chances.

Catania had penalty appeals for a challenge on Taka Morimoto, but the only result was Delvecchio's yellow card for dissent.

In the second half Tiberio Guarente's close-range strike was deflected wide. On 66 minutes Andujar flew to have his palms stung by a Doni free kick. Spolli was unlucky not to break the deadlock when his attempt hit the crossbar and, as Delvecchio tapped in the rebound, was flagged offside.

Valdes rose above the crowd for a header that skimmed the far post and Morimoto's volley hit the side-netting. Catania nearly won it in stoppages, but Morimoto's first touch let him down and allowed Manfredini to clear.
