A goal from South Korean defender Cha Du-ri and solid defending from all 11 players lifted Freiburg to a 1-0 upset victory over previously unbeaten Schalke at Veltins-Arena.
Kevin Kuranyi had a chance go over the top early in the match, and Freiburg made that miss hurt in the 40th minute as Cha slipped past Benjamin Höwedes before dispatching a shot beyond Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Schalke manager Felix Magath used all three of his substitutions at the break, and Schalke dominated possession in the second half. But Freiburg's defense held firm, only having to survive a late scare as one of the subs, Levan Kenia, struck the crossbar with five minutes to go.
