Newly-promoted Montpellier recorded their first win back in Ligue 1 after sinking Sochaux 2-0 at Stade de la Mosson.
Rene Girard's southerners, unbeaten heading into the match after drawing against Paris St Germain and Lorient, picked up the points courtesy of goals from Alberto Costa (penalty) and Karim Ait-Fana inside the last half hour.
The visitors started strongly and recent signing Charlie Davies had two chances to give them the lead inside the first seven minutes.
Costa saw a 50th-minute free-kick blocked by Richert, before the home side broke the deadlock on the hour.
A penalty was awarded after Sochaux's Ivan Stevanovic handled the ball in the area and Costa gave Richert no chance from the spot.
Steve Marveaux went close to doubling the lead eight minutes later when his header went inches wide.
Sochaux rarely threatened throughout the game and Montpellier where worthy winners.
