Monaco vs. Lorient

For 20 minutes this match was a tight affair, but the home side would gradually build up some momentum to garner a two goal lead by the break. Frederic Nimani was first to be denied by visiting goalkeeper Fabien Audard, while Djamel Bakar had a couple of openings thereafter.

There was a hint of fortune in les Monegasques’ opening goal, as Nene’s corner was struck goalwards by Diego Perez without great conviction. The ball ended up at Nimani’s feet, however, and he slotted home casually.

Twelve minutes later it was two. Brazilian free kick magician Nene took aim from the edge of the box, dropping an effort over the wall and leaving Audard totally beaten.

While Lorient did attack, their efforts were largely impotent in comparison to the striking of Monaco, who would push Audard to the limit with second half strikes from Bakar and Nene. As time wore on, the visitors improved, with Kevin Gameiro starting to establish himself in proceedings, however, Stephane Ruffier’s only real save of note came from a James Fanchone effort.

When Gameiro was taken off in the final ten minutes due to injury, the game was up, as Lorient were battling on with ten men as they had made all their substitutes. However, a comeback was looking hugely unlikely at that tardy stage.
